"Much of the research into Parkinson's disease treatments is focused on saving the bodies of these cells, but our results suggest that keeping axons healthy also is essential," says Karen O'Malley of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

"When axons die back, dopamine is no longer delivered to the neurons that need it. The cell body also has fewer connections to other cells and it needs those connections to survive," she added.

She compared the axon's system for transporting supplies to a railroad. Mitochondria are part of the railroad's cargo. They supply the energy that allows the axon to do its work.

For the study, O'Malley gave cultured mouse nerve cells, a toxin called MPP+ that causes Parkinson's-like symptoms.

She found that the toxin stopped the movement of mitochondria in the axon in 30 minutes. The railroad still functioned, shipping other cargo to the end of the axon. But most mitochondria either stopped moving or were headed for the cell body instead of the axon.

Scientists screened several compounds to see if they could block the toxin's effects. They discovered that only two antioxidants, glutathione and N-acetyl cysteine worked.

N-acetyl cysteine has already been shown to be effective in animal models of Parkinson's disease and is used as a treatment for other disorders in patients.

The study has been published in The Journal of Neuroscience.

"Well, it's clear that nuclear power has been set back," says Richard Lester, who runs the nuclear engineering department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "There'll be many years, I think, perhaps a decade, who knows, where we'll be dealing with the consequences of this accident."

What are those consequences? Well, Japan now says no, we will not build those 14 reactors. Ditto with Germany; it's saying no new plants there either. Other countries are rethinking nuclear plans as well.

That means Japan and Germany will have to find another way to make more electricity.

A Growing Source of Power

Philip Sharp, who runs the research group Resources for the Future, says that's likely to be natural gas. Luckily, there seems to be plenty around. "We really have discovered over the past three or four years this very large quantity of gas and therefore will not be very expensive relative to other fuels and therefore will become the most likely fuel for new electric power plants," Sharp says.

A lot of that new gas is in the U.S., especially in underground shale deposits. Economist Kevin Book with ClearView Energy Partners says Japan could be a huge market for American gas. There's a hitch, though.

"The problem is it can't leave right now," he says. "There's government policy and capacity that has to be put into place for the U.S. to participate. The problem is, if the U.S. doesn't participate, other countries will."

Book says the U.S. doesn't have facilities to liquefy gas to ship it abroad. Foreign suppliers do.

The Japanese government says it will also make up the loss of its nuclear future with solar power and other renewable fuels. Germany plans to do the same ? in fact, close to a fifth of its energy already comes from renewable sources.

Says Book: "Germany has successfully mobilized renewables as a way to create jobs and they have done it with such a continuity of success, that they believe that not only is 40 percent renewables by 2020 possible, it's probably going to be a popular political program."

Japan is farther behind in renewable energy. The country may turn in part to diesel fuel to make electricity in the short term. That could push up world oil prices.

New Regulations In The U.S.?

In the U.S., nuclear plants provide a fifth of all the electricity. But no one's built a new plant in decades. It's cheaper to keep old plants running longer.

Ernest Moniz, head the Energy Initiative at MIT, says a nuclear "renaissance" in the U.S. isn't likely any time soon. "It's not the end of nuclear power but it will cast a lot of uncertainty over the next years."

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is reviewing whether to strengthen safety at American reactors. Moniz says if they do, it could raise the already-high cost of building a new reactor.

"If new regulations come about that substantially impact the capital requirements or lead to a much more extended licensing and construction period, those could be quite detrimental to any new nuclear," Moniz says.

How far are we willing to go to tolerate those high risks?

For nuclear skeptics like physicist Ed Lyman at the Union of Concerned Scientists, American reactor operators already need to spend more.

"The main problem is that the NRC and the industry still believe that these types of events are so improbable that you don't have to spend a lot of money or time worrying about them," Lyman says. "And as a result, they are getting what they pay for, which are inadequate plans which may not work."

Lyman says severe weather or flooding could cut power to a reactor just as the Japanese earthquake and tsunami did. He says backup safety equipment should be designed and proven to survive the most extreme events.

Fukushima shows that there will always be some risk from nuclear reactors. For Philip Sharp at Resources for the Future, that presents the public with a big question: "To what degree (are) we as a people... to accept that some of these things are high risk, and how far are we willing to go to tolerate those high risks?"

And the answer to that question could ultimately change the way the world makes electricity, and how much it costs.

The simple truth is that setting goals is yet one more of those easy-to-do, easy-not-to-do tasks. Let?s discover the straightforward way to travel from dreams to goals, goals to strategy, strategy to tactics.

What makes some folks ?big dreamers? while others are ?go-getters? ? Why do so many individuals have trouble with setting goals, but seem to be able to dream consistently? Just where do goals come from? Almost all goals are derived from dreams of objectives. I desire to live in a large residence at some point and drive an expensive automobile as well as have a couple of smart children. Having dreams is considered the easy component, accomplishing the goals, is another matter. One reason many people do not set out goals in the first place, is usually fear of not reaching the goal. What would people think if you fall short of your goal? That occasion has arrived to shore up your self confidence and do it now. Set your goal.

When will a dream become a goal? Dreams grow to be goals when the dreams are written down. The real magic occurs when you write down your dreams. They become even more tangible in your life. Write your current goals down and look at them frequently, perhaps on a daily basis. Be sure to keep them very simple. Strive to examine them in the morning and before you sleep at night.

Why don?t we demonstrate the main difference between goals, strategies and tactics. Goals are the written ?Big Picture? plans. The strategy is really a procedure on how the goal might be reached. A tactic is a step you take accomplish the strategy. So let???s say you would like to become an Oracle database specialist. An illustration of some tactics to achieve the strategy may include: acquiring online IT training resources like oracle adf training; studying for any required certification tests by signing up for Oracle courses which can be taken online or on-site; and also by creating a proposal to your boss to ensure you will be reimbursed for certification training expenses you may incur.

Don?t forget, it might take a variety of strategies to attain your goal. A second strategy could be to gain hands-on experience, with tactics such as installing Oracle on your home computer and setting up a practice database. Some people commonly mix up dreams, goals, strategies and tactics. A typical test marketing people implement to determine if a statement is a strategy or tactic is the ?what if? test. What if we save money to go on our trip to Mexico, a strategy, as opposed to, what if we opened a bank account, a tactic.

And so the next time you find yourself having dreams about your future, take out a pen and write down your goals. Next remember the ?what if? test to create your plan. You will be attaining your goals faster than ever.

If you're looking for a sleek, angular slab of an all-in-one desktop computer, Lenovo may have the machine for you, as we've just intercepted plans for this unannounced ThinkCentre Edge 91z, and she's most definitely a beaut. According to the leaked PDF, Lenovo will fully reveal the 21.5-inch, 1080p desktop in just two days and ship it in June, but for now we can tell you that it can be configured with low-power Intel Core i7 processors, discrete ATI graphics and a 80GB mSATA auxiliary SSD -- the latter of which Lenovo says can boot in just 20 seconds.
