AP Photos: Falconers hunting on outskirts of Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? Like his ancestors, Iraqi-born falcon trainer Abu Badr al-Anazi swings the carcass of a pigeon to attract a falcon released a few hundred meters (yards) away. The bird of prey arcs over the desert outskirts of Dubai before sinking its talons into the lure.

While the methods to develop top-quality hunting falcons date back to antiquity, its transition into a modern Middle Eastern passion has brought in microchip tagging and price tags that can run well over $10,000 for a prime bird.

The falconry season starts in November in the Persian Gulf states when the weather cools. In late afternoon and early mornings, the falconers ? Emiratis, Syrians, Iraqis and others ? drive into the desert outside Dubai in SUVs to train the birds for hunting and racing competitions organizing by the country's sheiks.

Each bird has a microchip inserted beneath its skin and a numbered ring fitted on its leg for identification.

Falconry has been part of the traditional life of the Arabian Peninsula for centuries. Bedouin have practiced it to hunt hare and houbara, a quail-like bird that is among the falcon's main prey in the wild. After the Gulf's oil boom, falconry turned into a more casual sport and hobby.

During the training session, one falconer removes the hood from the bird's eyes while another, in the distance, swings the lure ? a dead pigeon or some meat ? while calling the bird's name. If the bird catches the lure, it's rewarded with some meat. Later, the falconer uses a live pigeon to carry on the training.

This part is important for Islamic hunters as it teaches the falcon not to kill its prey immediately. In order for the hunters to be able to eat the prey in accordance with Muslim beliefs, it must still be alive when its throat is cut and blood is drained. Once properly trained, a falcon will hold a captured houbara without killing it.

Obama's New Fiscal Cliff Offer: Tax Hikes on $400K, 2-Year Debt Ceiling Extension

The White House says this offer is ?good.?

According to Boehner spokesman Brendan Buck ? who apparently is talking to Politico because it?s friendly to Republicans who cave ? the Speaker is increasingly happy with Obama?s proposals. ??Any movement away from the unrealistic offers the President has made previously is a step in the right direction, but a proposal that includes $1.3 trillion in revenue for only $930 billion in spending cuts cannot be considered balanced,? he said ?We hope to continue discussions with the President so we can reach an agreement that is truly balanced and begins to solve our spending problem.?

Obama still wants unemployment benefits extended, stimulus spending, and most importantly, a two-year indefinite suspension of the debt ceiling.

Massive Napa do-over prompts grape plant shortage

(AP) ? A massive replanting in Napa Valley of some of the world's priciest vineyards is so widespread a critical shortage of grapevine root stock has developed.

Giant suppliers such as Sunridge Nurseries in Bakersfield are taking orders for 2014 and beyond.

The shortage is due to a trifecta of developments. Aging cabernet vines planted after the deadly phylloxera (fil-OX-er-uh) outbreak across Napa Valley in the 1980s are due to be replaced. The reviving economy has created a surge in demand for premium grapes. And some growers are looking for clones and varieties better suited for their microclimates.

Mondavi alone is planting 1.5 million new vines.

Jennifer Putnam of Napa Valley Grapegrowers says the massive do-over, which will take place over many years, will allow them to raise the bar on quality.

(AP) ? An Islamist faction of Syrian rebels captured an infantry base in the northern city of Aleppo, its fighters said Sunday, as rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad advance on the country's largest city.

It was the second major army installation the rebels overran in a week in Aleppo, as the civil war closes in on Assad's troops and fighting intensifies in and around the capital, Damascus. The fighters have also seized air bases near both cities in recent weeks.

A statement by the al-Tawheed Brigade said the rebels "fully liberated" the military facility in Aleppo on Saturday. It was posted on al-Tawheed's official website on Sunday and said the brigade's commander, Col. Youssef al-Jader know as Abu Furat, was killed in the battle for the military facility.

Al-Tawheed Brigade is one of the largest rebel groups operating in Aleppo, which has been a major front in the civil war since July.

One of the videos posted on the group's website shows the body of a man the narrator says is "the hero and martyr who was killed on the day of liberating the infantry school." A boy said to be Abu Furat's son is seen crying as he leans over the dead man.

Rebels are seen loading boxes of ammunition onto a truck, with several tanks and armored vehicles parked nearby.

Another video shows several rebels praying on the premises of the captured base. Armed fighters are also seen walking around the infantry school with slogans "Assad Forever" painted on the walls. Pictures of Assad and his late father, Hafez, still hang on the walls.

The Assad family has ruled Syria with an iron fist for more than 40 years.

The uprising against the family started in March 2011 as peaceful protests, but quickly turned into civil war after the government's brutal crackdown on dissent.

Activists say more than 40,000 people have been killed in almost 21 months of conflict that has increasingly sectarian overtones.

The opposition fighters mostly come from Syria's majority Sunni Muslim community. Assad's regime is dominated by members of the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Healthy Living Can Prevent Breast Cancer: Area Resources - Palos ...

You might be able to find help fighting breast cancer and other types of cancers at your local grocery store and fitness centers,?according to the research findings of Dr. Marian Neuhouser, Ph.D, RD.?

Dr. Neuhouser is a nutritional epidemiologist with a background in nutritional sciences. She is an investigator at Seattle?s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Her research is focused on lifestyle factors such as nutrition and physical activity. Some factors may prevent breast and prostate cancer and improve survivorship in those diagnosed with cancer. ?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year, more than 200,000 American women are diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 American women will die from breast cancer.

Dr. Neuhouser?s research has found that for postmenopausal women in particular, being overweight or obese may increase the risk for breast cancer.

Dr. Neuhouser explains, ?After menopause, estrogens are synthesized by adipose tissue?the more adipose a woman has, the more estrogen she will make. Adipose cells also synthesize inflammatory factors, which have been linked to breast cancer.?

One of the most important things a woman at risk for breast cancer can do, says Dr. Neuhouser, is to ?maintain a healthy weight." ?

Given what the research indicates, Dr. Neuhouser says, ?One of the most important things is that if a woman is overweight or obese, she should be advised to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight. Daily physical activity and following healthy eating habits with plentiful fruits and vegetables and minimal empty calories and fried foods will help achieve these goals.?

Dr. Neuhouser says while it can be challenging to lose weight, ?Small changes can add up and make a big difference."

When it comes to getting active, Dr. Neuhouser says, "If someone is not used to physical activity, try a five to ten minute walk and gradually increase the time. Having physical activity partners or walking partners always helps. I know my soccer team will be waiting for me on the field, so even if I am tired or busy, I still show up."

As for food,?Dr. Neuhouser says, "Start with making one new food change each week. Instead of eating two cookies, eat just one.?

If you are concerned about your weight, Dr. Neuhouser suggests getting the support you need by asking your doctor for ? a referral to a reputable weight loss program.??For nutrition advice, Dr. Neuhouser recommends asking for a referral to a registered dietitian.

A 'Kit' for increasing insulin production

ScienceDaily (July 17, 2012) ? Scientists from Western University in London, Canada and the Children's Health Research Institute, an Institute within the Lawson Health Research Institute, have identified the critical role of a receptor called c-Kit in the development and function of insulin-producing beta cells, making it an exciting therapeutic target for the management of diabetes.

The research, led by Rennian Wang, demonstrated that overexpression of c-Kit not only leads to increased insulin production but also counteracts the early diabetic effects of a high-fat diet. The paper and an accompanying commentary, are published in the August issue of Diabetologia, and featured in the Research Highlights in Nature Reviews Endocrinology (June 5).

Diabetes is one of the most common metabolic diseases affecting over 25 million Americans and 2 million Canadians. It's associated with a multitude of complications leading to considerable morbidity and a major medical as well as financial burden on society.

One of the major defects in diabetes is the loss of beta cells in the pancreatic islet. Wang and colleagues, including Zhi Chao Feng, a PhD candidate and first author on the paper, developed a transgenic mouse model (c-Kit Wv) which overexpressed c-Kit, specifically in beta cells. "When c-Kit is overexpressed, we observed a significant improvement in beta cell function and survival," says Wang, a Professor in the Departments of Physiology and Pharmacology, and Medicine at Western's Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. "You can even rescue c-Kit mutant mice from the early onset of diabetes, and protect against high-fat diet-induced beta cell defects. This is a novel finding and is being reported for the first time."

Wang believes ongoing research into c-Kit and its underlying mechanisms, will pave the way to develop strategies to preserve and restore function to beta cells as a cure for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This study was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Five Favorite Films with Hugo Weaving

Between playing Elrond in Lord of the Rings, voicing Megatron in Transformers and -- most memorably -- intimidating Keanu Reeves as the sinister Agent Smith in The Matrix, Hugo Weaving has been an integral part of three of the biggest film franchises of the past decade or so. The versatile Australian-born actor also delivered an uncanny Werner Herzog impression as Red Skull in Marvel's Captain America, will star in the Wachoswki's forthcoming Cloud Atlas and, of course, is reprising his role as Rivendell's boss elf in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit, due at the end of the year.

Yet being one of Hollywood's busiest character actors hasn't stopped Weaving from returning periodically to his homeland for some compelling lead roles, like that in this week's acclaimed Last Ride -- which has been hailed by no less than Roger Ebert as "the performance of a lifetime." A tough but ultimately moving (and beautifully lensed) road movie directed by Cannes' short film winner Glendyn Ivin, Ride has Weaving as a grizzled ex-con on the run across the Australian countryside, where he bond with his 10-tear-old son in tow. The film debuted to much praise in its native territory, and this week finds its way to select theaters in the US. We had the chance to speak with Weaving for the release, where he talked about five of his favorite movies.

My five favorite films would change from, you know, day to day, but if you want five of my favorite films, one would have to be The Rules of the Game, by Renoir. A fabulous upstairs-downstairs look at French society in a very particular period. It's both unbelievably sad and tragic, and moving and funny. And a delightfully humanist film. In fact, a lot of my favorite films are like that.

For instance, A Tree of Wooden Clogs, which would have to be one of my favorite films. A year in the life of a peasant commune in Italy -- again, it's poor souls living through a year, so you're getting a sense of seasons and hardship and community, and a simple, very basic deprived existence. I think that's a masterpiece, that film.

Closely Watched Trains, one of my all-time favorite films, by Jiri Menzel. Funny, wry, beautiful, entertaining; and subversive, in its own quirky way. A beautiful film.

If....
(Lindsay Anderson, 1968; 97% Tomatometer)

A film like If..... Lindsay Anderson's If...., which I think is a work of genius.

And Barry Lyndon. Anything by Kubrick. [Pauses] 2001... no... Barry Lyndon, yeah. If we're talking about Australian films, probably something like Ten Canoes. That's probably my favorite Australian film ever made, actually. I think it's a great, great film. I've probably listed more than five. And then there's 8 ?... I could go on forever. There are some great films coming to mind, like The Return, the Russian film. [Laughs] I'll stop.

Last Ride opens in select theaters this week and is available to watch now through VOD.

First photo of shadow of single atom

Wednesday, July 4, 2012

In an international scientific breakthrough, a Griffith University research team has been able to photograph the shadow of a single atom for the first time.

"We have reached the extreme limit of microscopy; you can not see anything smaller than an atom using visible light," Professor Dave Kielpinski of Griffith University's Centre for Quantum Dynamics in Brisbane, Australia.

"We wanted to investigate how few atoms are required to cast a shadow and we proved it takes just one," Professor Kielpinski said.

Published this week in Nature Communications, "Absorption imaging of a single atom "is the result of work over the last 5 years by the Kielpinski/Streed research team.

At the heart of this Griffith University achievement is a super high-resolution microscope, which makes the shadow dark enough to see.

No other facility in the world has the capability for such extreme optical imaging.

Holding an atom still long enough to take its photo, while remarkable in itself, is not new technology; the atom is isolated within a chamber and held in free space by electrical forces.

Professor Kielpinski and his colleagues trapped single atomic ions of the element ytterbium and exposed them to a specific frequency of light. Under this light the atom's shadow was cast onto a detector, and a digital camera was then able tocapture the image.

"By using the ultra hi-res microscope we were able to concentrate the image down to a smaller area than has been achieved before, creating a darker image which is easier to see", Professor Kielpinski said.

The precision involved in this process is almost beyond imagining.

"If we change the frequency of the light we shine on the atom by just one part in abillion, the image can no longer be seen," Professor Kielpinski said.

Research team member, Dr Erik Streed, said the implications of these findings are far reaching.

"Such experiments help confirm our understanding of atomic physics and may be useful for quantum computing," Dr Streed said.

There are also potential follow-on benefits for biomicroscopy.

"Because we are able to predict how dark a single atom should be, as in how much light it should absorb in forming a shadow, we can measure if the microscope is achieving the maximum contrast allowed by physics."

"This is important if you want to look at very small and fragile biological samples such as DNA strands where exposure to too much UV light or x-rays will harm the material.

"We can now predict how much light is needed to observe processes within cells, under optimum microscopy conditions, without crossing the threshold and destroying them."

And this may get biologists thinking about things in a different way.

"In the end, a little bit of light just might be enough to get the job done."

Apple aware of corrupt apps issue, working on a fix

Apple aware of corrupt apps issue, working on a fix

Earlier this morning, reports started circulating that the App Store was pushing corrupt binaries to iOS and Mac users, resulting in constant crashes of the affected apps. Marco Arment, of Instapaper fame, was one of the first to notice and very vocal -- bringing the issue to the attention of many in the media and at Apple. The list of affected apps is pretty staggering, including such high profile titles as Angry Birds Space, Yahoo! Search, Google Reader and, of course, Instapaper. The number of developers affected now tops 115, so we'd hold off on those updates. For the first several hours Apple was mum on the issue, but it has finally acknowledged the problem in the support forums and even reached out to developers via email. Suspicions seem to be that the FairPlay DRM is at the root, but until we have official word from Apple we'll refrain from laying the blame at its feet. Cupertino is working (we assume tirelessly) on a fix, which will hopefully be delivered sooner, rather than later.

9/11 Memorial: Bloomberg Rejects Port Authority Control To 'Keep Out Of Political Process'

NEW YORK -- New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has rejected the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's efforts to have a greater say over the 9/11 memorial.

The mayor said Monday control should remain with the National September 11 Memorial & Museum foundation to keep the site out of "the political process."

The mayor chairs the foundation. The Port Authority, controlled by the two state governors, owns the trade center site. The two sides have been feuding since last year, stalling the 9/11 museum's completion.

A spokesman for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said no one was interested in politicizing anything.

Iran says it test-fires missiles in war of nerves

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran said on Tuesday it had successfully tested medium-range missiles capable of hitting Israel as a response to threats of attack, the latest move in a war of nerves with the West.

Israel says it could attack Iran if diplomacy fails to secure a halt to its disputed nuclear energy program. The United States also has military force as a possible option but has repeatedly encouraged the Israelis to be patient while new economic sanctions are implemented against Iran.

The Islamic Republic announced the "Great Prophet 7" missile exercise on Sunday after a European embargo against Iranian crude oil purchases took full effect following another fruitless round of big power talks with Tehran.

Iran's official English-language Press TV said the Shahab 3 missile with a range of 1,300 km (800 miles) - able to reach Israel - was tested along with the shorter-range Shahab 1 and 2.

"The main aim of this drill is to demonstrate the Iranian nation's political resolve to defend vital values and national interests," Revolutionary Guards Deputy Commander Hossein Salami was quoted by Press TV as saying.

He said the tests were in response to Iran's enemies who talk of a "military option being on the table".

On Sunday, Iran threatened to wipe Israel "off the face of the earth" if the Jewish state attacked it.

Analysts have challenged some of Iran's military assertions, saying it often exaggerates its capabilities.

Senior researcher Pieter Wezeman of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute said Iran's missiles were still relatively inaccurate and of limited use in conventional warfare. With conventional warheads, "their only utility is as a tool of terror and no more than that", he said by telephone.

He added, however, that they could be suitable for carrying nuclear warheads, especially the larger ones.

The International Institute for Strategic Studies, said in a 2010 report that all Tehran's ballistic missiles were "inherently capable of a nuclear payload", if Iran was able to make a small enough bomb.

Iran denies Western accusations that it is seeking to develop nuclear weapons capability. The world's No. 5 oil exporter maintains that it is enriching uranium only to generate more energy for a rapidly growing population.

OIL MARKETS ON EDGE

Iran has previously threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz, through which more than a third of the world's seaborne oil trade passes, in response to increasingly harsh sanctions by the United States and its allies intended to force it to curb its nuclear research program.

Fars said dozens of missiles involved in this week's exercises had been aimed at simulated air bases, and that Iranian-built unmanned drones would be tested on Wednesday.

Iran repeated its claim to be reverse-engineering the sophisticated U.S. RQ-170 drone that it says it brought down during a spying mission last year.

"In this drone there are hundreds of technologies used, each of which are valuable to us in terms of operations, information and technicalities," General Amir Hajizadeh was quoted by the ISNA news agency as saying.

Wezeman said Iran had a large standing armed force, but that its weapons were generally outdated. "And those weapons only get older and older and they don't have access to new technology because they are under a United Nations arms embargo."

In his first comments since the European Union oil ban took force, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said sanctions would benefit Iran by lessening its dependence on crude exports.

"We must see the sanctions as an opportunity ... which can forever take out of the enemy's hands the ability to use oil as a weapon for sanctions," Fars news agency quoted him as saying.

Negotiations over Iran's nuclear program continued in Istanbul on Tuesday with a meeting of technical experts from Iran and six world powers.

The discussions follow a round of political talks in Moscow last month at which the sides failed to bridge differences or agree on a further round of talks at that level.

The experts have no mandate to strike agreements but the six powers - the United States, China, Britain, Germany, France and Russia - hope that by clarifying technical aspects of Tehran's work they can open way for more negotiations in the future.

"We hope Iran will seize the opportunity of this meeting to show a willingness to take concrete steps to urgently meet the concerns of the international community," EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said ahead of the meeting.

As a priority, the powers want Iran to stop enriching uranium to levels close to weapons-grade, ship out any stockpile, and close a secret facility where such work is done.

Iran denies its program has a military dimension and wants relief from economic sanctions before it makes any concessions.

IRANIAN CALL TO SHUT OIL LANES

On Monday, Iranian parliamentarians proposed a bill calling for Iran to try to stop tankers taking crude through the Strait of Hormuz to countries that support the sanctions.

However, the Iranian parliament is relatively weak, analysts say, and the proposal has no chance of becoming law unless sanctioned by Iran's clerical supreme leader.

That is seen as unlikely in the near term given that Western powers have said they would tolerate no closure of the Strait while Iranian leaders, wedded to strategic pragmatism for the sake of survival, have said they seek no war with anyone.

"It's a gesture at this stage," said independent British-based Iran analyst Reza Esfandiari.

"They want to emphasize that Iran can make life difficult for Europe and America. I think this is more of an attempt to offset falling crude prices. Financial markets are very sensitive to such talk."

On Tuesday, the price of Brent crude, which has been on a downward trend for the last three months, broke $100 for the first time since early June.

"A lot depends on nuclear talks," said Esfandiari. "If there's no progress and the initiative is deadlocked, then these kind of actions will intensify."

Active ingredient of cannabis has no effect on the progression of multiple sclerosis, study suggests

ScienceDaily (June 15, 2012) ? The first large non-commercial study to investigate whether the main active constituent of cannabis (tetrahydrocannabinol or THC) is effective in slowing the course of progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) shows that there is no evidence to suggest this; although benefits were noted for those at the lower end of the disability scale.

The CUPID (Cannabinoid Use in Progressive Inflammatory brain Disease) study was carried out by researchers from the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry (PCMD), Plymouth University. The study was funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC) and managed by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) on behalf of the MRC-NIHR partnership, the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Multiple Sclerosis Trust.

The preliminary results of CUPID are to be presented by lead researcher Professor John Zajicek at the Association of British Neurologists' Annual Meeting in Brighton on May 29th.

CUPID enrolled nearly 500 people with MS from 27 centres around the UK, and has taken eight years to complete. People with progressive MS were randomised to receive either THC capsules or identical placebo capsules for three years, and were carefully followed to see how their MS changed over this period. The two main outcomes of the trial were a disability scale administered by neurologists (the Expanded Disability Status Scale), and a patient report scale of the impact of MS on people with the condition (the Multiple Sclerosis Impact Scale 29).

Overall the study found no evidence to support an effect of THC on MS progression in either of the main outcomes. However, there was some evidence to suggest a beneficial effect in participants who were at the lower end of the disability scale at the time of enrollment but, as the benefit was only found in a small group of people rather than the whole population, further studies will be needed to assess the robustness of this finding. One of the other findings of the trial was that MS in the study population as a whole progressed slowly, more slowly than expected. This makes it more challenging to find a treatment effect when the aim of the treatment is that of slow progression.

As well as evaluating the potential neuroprotective effects and safety of THC over the long-term, one of the aims of the CUPID study was to improve the way that clinical trial research is done by exploring newer methods of measuring MS and using the latest statistical methods to make the most of every piece of information collected. This analysis will continue for several months. The CUPID study will therefore provide important information about conducting further large scale clinical trials in MS.

Professor John Zajicek, Professor of Clinical Neuroscience at PCMD, Plymouth University, said: "To put this study into context: current treatments for MS are limited, either being targeted at the immune system in the early stages of the disease or aimed at easing specific symptoms such as muscle spasms, fatigue or bladder problems. At present there is no treatment available to slow MS when it becomes progressive. Progression of MS is thought to be due to death of nerve cells, and researchers around the world are desperately searching for treatments that may be 'neuroprotective'. Laboratory experiments have suggested that certain cannabis derivatives may be neuroprotective."

He added: "Overall our research has not supported laboratory based findings and shown that, although there is a suggestion of benefit to those at the lower end of the disability scale when they joined CUPID, there is little evidence to suggest that THC has a long term impact on the slowing of progressive MS."

Dr Doug Brown, Head of Biomedical Research at the MS Society, said: "There are currently no treatments for people with progressive MS to slow or stop the worsening of disability. The MS Society is committed to supporting research in this area and this was an important study for us to fund. While this study sadly suggests THC is ineffective at slowing the course of progressive MS, we will not stop our search for effective treatments. We are encouraged by the possibility shown by this study that THC may have potential benefits for some people with MS and we welcome further investigation in this area."

Report: LA Wal-Mart lobbyist posed as reporter

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? An associate at a lobbying firm tapped to bring a Walmart store to downtown Los Angeles has left the firm after she posed as a reporter at a news conference held by a labor group that opposed the big-box store.

City Ethics Commission records show Stephanie Harnett worked for Mercury Public Affairs, which received $60,000 from Walmart to lobby for a Wal-Mart store to be built in Chinatown, the Los Angeles Times said in its Friday edition (lat.ms/KLzwYh).

The project provoked opposition from labor groups, which complain about unfair conditions at the retailer.

Last week, one of those groups, Warehouse Workers United, held a news conference and Harnett signed a media sheet saying she was a student at the University of Southern California named "Zoe Mitchell."

Union Spokeswoman Elizabeth Brennan said Harnett interviewed a warehouse worker using an audio recorder for 20 minutes without saying she was working for Wal-Mart.

"She told him she was a journalism student at USC and that she was a storyteller from the heart," Brennan said.

Brennan said she saw Harnett again at another news conference, and an activist pointed out that she was actually a lobbyist.

Mercury released a statement saying Harnett's actions were "in no way approved, authorized, or directed by Wal-Mart or Mercury."

"Stephanie is a junior member of our team who made an immature decision," Becky Warren, managing director for Mercury, said in the statement. "She showed very poor judgment, and Mercury takes full responsibility. We are taking the necessary disciplinary actions. This is an isolated incident that has never happened before and will not happen again."

Warren would not confirm to the Times whether Harnett was fired or resigned, saying only she is "no longer with our firm."

Wal-Mart spokesman Steven Restivo said what Harnett did was "unacceptable, misleading and wrong."

"Our culture of integrity is a constant at Wal-Mart, and by not properly identifying herself, this individual's behavior was contrary to our values and the way we do business," Restivo told the Times.

Harnett did not respond to an email seeking comment from the Times, and a phone message left by The Associated Press at a listing in her name was not immediately returned.

The incident was first reported by the website Gawker.

With tiring tactics, England needs quick recovery

By ROB HARRIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:11 a.m. ET June 12, 2012

DONETSK, Ukraine (AP) -England's opening draw against France has showed just how hard it'll be to break them down at the European Championship, but their exhausting, defensive tactics rely on veteran players and have won few admirers.

Scott Parker and Steven Gerrard, charged with taking the sting out of the French attacks, are both in their 30s and endured grueling club campaigns.

Gerrard has had niggling injuries in recent years, while Parker has required a painkilling injection to keep him going.

Just how obstinate England was on Monday was underscored by the fact that no goalkeeper in the tournament is yet to make more saves than Joe Hart, while Gerrard, Parker and Joleon Lescott have made the most blocks in the opening eight games.

And after the initiative England had for the first 20 minutes was lost, a French onslaught curtailed any plans to make marauding runs through the center to feed the forwards.

That meant a quiet, often frustrating night for Danny Welbeck and Ashley Young as they made their first tournament appearances.

With Wayne Rooney suspended for the second game against Sweden on Friday, Hodgson could switch the stylish Welbeck for the battering-ram forward Andy Carroll, who can bully defenders.

"He's a different type of player to the others in the squad," England coach Roy Hodgson said. "He has that aerial ability that is very useful, but also the ability to make the runs behind defenders and use the strength and power ... (to) turn defenses around, and can do damage on crosses."

The surprise selection of Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain on the left of midfield against France showed that Hodgson is prepared to take risks rather than sticking with tried and tested formulas, although the teenager's opportunities to burst down the flanks were limited.

The challenge on Friday will be finding the space to pass the ball forward.

"Obviously sometimes, especially in tournament football, you are going to be outplayed and it is just about getting the right result. We got a good result," Chamberlain said. "I think I did OK, just OK. I think it was a bit frustrating for me getting space to do what I like to do and run at people.

"I like to find space out wide but the way we play, we like to play compactly, and I think we had to against a good French team who almost overran us in midfield."

But while Sweden coach Erik Hamren was berating his "cowards" for falling to a 2-1 loss to co-host Ukraine on Monday, Hodgson was praising his team's grit and determination.

It didn't help that the England players appeared to wilt more in the Ukrainian heat than their counteparts, who appeared to be more forward thinking by wrapping their players in ice jackets at half time.

Now England has four days to recover before taking on Sweden on Friday in its second Group D match in what should be cooler conditions in Kiev.

The newspapers the fans read back home on Tuesday were also resoundingly positive, reflecting contentment that Hodgson's side avoided defeat in his first competitive match in charge of England.

Pros and Cons of Travel Insurance

Is travel insurance really necessary?? It depends on where you?re traveling, for how long, what you?ll be doing.? It also depends on your tolerance for risk.? You need to consider what might happen, and then decide if you?re adequately covered if such a thing does happen.? Travel insurance policies are designed to protect you from things that can, and do, happen to travelers.? It can be costly, but ask anyone who?s had something happen while vacationing, and they?ll tell you they are glad they had it.?

But it?s up to you.? To get you thinking, here are some pros and cons of travel insurance.

Probably the most important benefit of travel insurance is medical coverage.? Most health plans have restrictions on coverage when you?re traveling.? If you, or someone in your family, gets sick or injured while traveling, you want access to proper medical care and treatment.? Depending on where you are vacationing, your options could be limited.? It may be necessary for you to be transported to another facility that can provide treatment.? The costs can really add up.

Another benefit is being covered for natural disasters.? Have you noticed the rise in frequency and magnitude of hurricanes and tornadoes in the United States?? Are you going to a country that could experience an earthquake, or a catastrophic flood?? What about terrorism and political upheaval?? The chances may be remote, but what if a situation does occur, and you need to get out of that country?? Travel insurance can help you make arrangement for an early departure, and get you reimbursed for your canceled vacation.

Finally, travel insurance covers your for the loss or theft of personal property, beginning with loss baggage.? You have to admit, this is something that happens all the time, and usually at the worse possible times.? By filing a simple claim, you can be reimbursed for lost items, get assistance with your credit cards and passport, and have medication replaced.

So what about the cons?

Naturally, there are good travel insurance providers, and bad ones.? The bad ones will entice you to buy coverage you don?t need, and may not tell you about requirements you must satisfy to be covered.? One common situation with most insurers is that you need to contact them before you receive any medical treatment.? It?s common to file a claim, and get some kind of approval, even with a good company.? The trick is to make sure you know what is required.

Another common complaint is a company that tells you to pay your medical costs upfront and then submit a claim to be reimbursed.? If a travel insurance agent tells you this, tell that agent you are not interested in purchasing their policy.? And move on to another company.

Lastly, some representatives are not necessarily well-versed in customer service.? This is something you should be able to judge from the sales representative.? If you are still not sure, make a call to claims number and ask questions.? If you sense negativity, move on to another company.

There are good providers.? Keep looking until you find one.
