For instance, Daniel Garcia, a marketing junior, someone who rarely plays the lottery, expressed a desire to play after the huge numbers were announced. ???Yeah, I saw it the other day,? Garcia said. ?I actually wanted to play it after that.?

?Eileen Lowers, a computer science and anthropology junior, who works in the Odum Library, also expressed a desire to play. ???My family plays, but I personally haven?t thought about it,? Lowers said. ?I think I might have to buy some now.?

?April Thomas, early childhood education major, said, ?I would make sure my family is straight, and then start my own business. I would also invest some of that money into other businesses and save some to make sure I do not go broke or be in debt.?

?Garcia said, ?I would give the money to my family and friends to enjoy it, and then I would probably just save it and then use it when I need to live off of it, and I would finish school.?

Zach Gravette, a special education freshman, said, ?I would pay off tuition for the next eight years. I would buy a house, a car, buy my parents a house, a car, invest and that?s about it.?

Josh Cates, another special education freshman, said, ?If I won it, I would probably buy my parents something, a house, and probably new cars, pay off school, buy me something and the rest I?ll save up.?

Another student was a little more ambitious.

??I would spend it on a lot of unnecessary things and some useful things, like education (pay that off first) and then pay off my bills and make sure my life?s set straight, and then try to invest it so it can grow more and hopefully I won?t have to get a job,? Jerry Hinkle, a political science junior, said.

The drawing for the Mega Millions lottery will be held on Friday night at 11 p.m and the odds of a ticket winning are 1 in 176 million.

Defense, DA sum up case of body in NYC high-rise

NEW YORK (AP) ? A handyman never did any harm to an office cleaner he's charged with smothering and stuffing into a high-rise air-conditioning vent, his lawyer said, but prosecutors called their evidence against Joseph Pabon crushing.

Both sides made closing arguments in Pabon's murder trial Thursday. Jury deliberations were expected to start Friday.

The 27-year-old Pabon is accused of killing Eridania Rodriguez, a professional bodybuilder's sister who vanished while cleaning a skyscraper in security-conscious lower Manhattan one night in July 2009. Her body was found after a four-day search.

Pabon worked in the same building. The night the 46-year-old woman disappeared, he was running a freight elevator on overtime as movers cleared furniture out of a recently vacated office.

After asking a coworker where the cleaning woman was, Pabon said he needed to use a bathroom and had someone else take over the elevator; his whereabouts weren't captured on any of the building's security cameras for the next 42 minutes, according to evidence at the trial. When he reappeared on a camera, he was in a back hallway, with a shirt around his neck.

Pabon's DNA was found on Rodriguez's fingernails and he had scratches on his neck and elsewhere. Prosecutors said he took unusual and necessary routes through the building that night to track her down and kill her on a deserted floor and then left work early, saying he was sick. An alleged motive was not part of the case against him.

The evidence "crushingly proves that the defendant is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt," Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Christine Keenan told jurors Thursday.

But Pabon's lawyers say authorities wrongly drew damning inferences from innocent circumstances and rushed to blame Pabon for a crime he didn't commit.

"That man right there didn't do a thing. Nothing," defense lawyer Mario Gallucci said in his closing argument.

Pabon barely knew Rodriguez, and he went home early because he was indeed sick, the defense says. His work involved heavy lifting that could explain the scratches on his body, and the sample of his DNA on Rodriguez's fingernails could have come from contact between the two in the course of handling a garbage bag, his lawyers say.

DNA from two other, unidentified men was found on evidence collected in the case, defense lawyers noted, and police said the building had had problems with vagrants sleeping in the stairwells.

Originally from San Francisco de Macoris in the Dominican Republic, Rodriguez had lived in Manhattan for decades. She was married with three children and had worked for about a year at the building on Rector Street, a few blocks from the World Trade Center site.

Her bodybuilder brother, Victor Martinez, is a high-ranked competitor who has won the Arnold Classic, an annual event promoted by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Pabon, whose family is originally from Puerto Rico, had worked at the building for a few years.

Astronauts scramble for escape pods as space junk threat gets serious

Some 22,000 chunks of space junk zip around the earth. On Saturday, six International Space Station astronauts scrambled for safety as a piece of a Russian satellite whizzed by.

The six earthlings ? three Russians, two Americans, and a Dutchman ? aboard the International Space Station were stirred from their slumber Saturday morning to jump into emergency escape pods, once again drawing into focus the growing dangers of hurtling space junk.

The astronauts, orbiting 200 miles above the planet, were told by ground control to scramble into two docked Soyuz spacecrafts in case a piece of a wrecked Russian satellite should smash into the ISS, which could have heavily damaged the platform as both objects were traveling at orbital speeds ? 17,500 miles per hour. The emergency was called off after the chunk passed by at an approximate distance of nine miles ? which in space terms is a near-miss.

"Everything went by the book and as expected, the small piece of cosmos satellite debris passed the international space station without incident,? said a NASA spokesman.

Ground controllers did not believe the ISS was in extreme danger, but ordered the emergency maneuver after determining that the trajectories could intersect.

NASA says there are about 22,000 pieces of sizable space junk ? primarily bits of old satellites ? orbiting the earth and has in the past ordered the ISS crew to adjust the craft's path to avoid collisions. In all, NASA tracks nearly half a million pieces of space junk.

The piece that threatened the ISS Saturday morning came from the 2009 collision of the Iridium communications satellite and the Russian Cosmos 2251.

NASA spotted the latest threat too late for the crew to move the ISS safely out of the way. It was the third time in 12 years that astronauts were ordered to scramble for safety. Last June, a piece of debris came within 1,100 feet of the craft.

NASA said it followed a ?precautionary and conservative? approach by ordering the astronauts to enter the escape pods. The astronauts ? Russians Anton Shkaplerov, Anatoly Ivanishin, and Oleg Kononenko, Americans Dan Pettit and Dan Burbank, and Dutchman Andre Kuipers ? were awakened about an hour early on what was to have been their day off to get into the Soyuz' crafts and close the hatches.

The spacefarers watched through the portholes to see if they could catch a glimpse of the zooming debris. "Nichevo ... Nothing," one of the Russian cosmonauts said.

If the 450-ton ISS had been hit and disabled, the astronauts were prepared to detach and descend back to earth in the capsules. Instead, they climbed back into the ISS and ?resumed a normal and relaxing weekend,? NASA spokesman Rob Navias told MSNBC.

In response to concerns from the National Research Council that space junk is posing an increased threat to the earth's critical satellite network and the ISS, spacefaring nations have signed compacts to adopt best practices to better control expired space craft and their inevitable return to earth. About one large piece of space junk falls to earth each year. Just this week, villagers in Siberia reported a large ?UFO fragment? falling to earth, even as space experts struggled to confirm its origin.

THURSDAY, March 15 (HealthDay News) ? Consuming the toxic metal cadmium in the foods you eat may raise your risk for breast cancer, a new Swedish study suggests.

Cadmium, which is found in many farm fertilizers, can make its way into soil and water, the researchers explained. Some of the main sources of cadmium in the diet are bread and other cereals, potatoes, root crops and vegetables. Once it enters the body, cadmium may mimic the effects of the female hormone estrogen, which can fuel the growth of certain breast cancers.

?Modern life has become increasingly dangerous for our breast health,? said Dr. Marisa Weiss, director of breast radiation oncology and breast health outreach at Lankenau Medical Center in Wynnewood, Pa. ?Now, there?s cadmium hanging onto our carrots and whole grains, the very vegetables that are supposed to be good for us,? she noted.

?To help our patients reduce their exposure to environmental chemicals (like cadmium), which might increase their risk for breast cancer, we have to partner with our farmers to make sure our foods are grown in healthy soil without chemically loaded fertilizers,? said Weiss, who is also president and founder of Breastcancer.org. ?Sticking to real, whole (unprocessed) foods remains a healthy strategy until we can be more sure of what?s inside the package.?

In the Swedish study, the researchers followed close to 56,000 women for more than 12 years. Women filled out food frequency questionnaires, which the researchers used to estimate how much cadmium they consumed in their diets. There were 2,112 breast cancer diagnoses during the follow-up period, including 1,626 estrogen receptor-positive and 290 estrogen receptor-negative cancers.

Women who had the highest amount of cadmium in their diets were 21 percent more likely to develop breast cancer than women who had the least amount of cadmium in their diets. This risk increased to 27 percent among women who were lean or normal-weight, the study showed. The risk was similar, 23 percent, for both estrogen receptor-positive and -negative tumors.

Those women who consumed higher amounts of whole grain and vegetables had a lower risk of breast cancer compared to women exposed to dietary cadmium through other foods.

?It?s possible that this healthy diet to some extent can counteract the negative effect of cadmium, but our findings need to be confirmed with
further studies,? study author Agneta Akesson, an associate professor at Karolinska Institute in Sweden, said in a news release from the American Association for Cancer Research. ?It is, however, important that the exposure to cadmium from all food is low.?

The findings are published in the March 15 issue of Cancer Research.

Johanna Lampe, a member of the public health sciences division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, said the new study adds to a growing body of research linking cadmium exposure to breast cancer risk. ?It adds another grain of sand to the pile,? she said. ?We would benefit from more research in this area to understand these risks better.?

The ideal study would use a more objective measure of cadmium exposure, such as cadmium levels in urine. ?We could look at women years before they develop breast cancer and measure cadmium exposure at certain points in time,? she explained.

In terms of lowering exposure to cadmium, Lampe said that smoking is the most important single source of cadmium exposure. ?Not smoking is a good place to start,? she noted.

Dr. Stephanie Bernik, chief of surgical oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, said that it is too early to recommend making any dietary changes based on these findings. ?We can?t say we should limit intake of fiber and other things that contain cadmium yet,? and some of the foods that contain cadmium are part of a healthy diet, Bernik stressed.

In the study, thinner women had a higher risk for breast cancer based on their exposure to cadmium. ?Obesity overrides any effect that cadmium may have on breast cancer,? Bernik said, adding that obesity is a greater risk factor for breast cancer than cadmium exposure, because ?when people are overweight, they have more estrogen circulating in the body.?

(Reuters) - Children's books publisher Scholastic Corp posted a narrower-than-expected quarterly loss and raised its outlook for the year, driven in part by increased sales of 'The Hunger Games' trilogy and higher book fair sales.

Sales of the Hunger Games books, Suzanne Collins' popular series of young adult novels, reached a high point in the quarter, ahead of the release of a movie based on it next week, Chief Executive Richard Robinson said.

The U.S. publisher of the Harry Potter series sees 2012 earnings from continuing operations at between $2.60 and $2.90 per share, and raised its revenue guidance to about $2 billion.

It had earlier forecast earnings per share of $1.75 to $2.10 from continuing operations on revenue of about $1.9 billion.

For the third quarter, net loss from continuing operations narrowed to $3.2 million, or 9 cents a share, from $25.1 million, or 77 cents a share, a year ago.

Revenue for the quarter rose 22 percent to $467 million.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S expected Scholastic to post a loss of 70 cents a share on revenue of $393 million in the quarter.

Shares of the company were up 8 percent in pre-market trade on Thursday. They had closed at $32.20 on Wednesday on the Nasdaq.

Daily Chronicle | County food drive to stock Feed'em Soup shelves

The Housing Authority of DeKalb County will collect canned goods and dry goods through March 26 with all items benefitting the Feed?em Soup Community Project.

Feed?em Soup provides home-cooked meals for free to whoever needs them on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month. Meals are served by waiters, and live music and other amenities are offered. A food pantry and clothing closet is also part of the soup kitchen, which is at 122 S. First St. in DeKalb.

The Housing Authority asks for donations of food that have the most impact at a pantry such as peanut butter, canned tuna fish and canned vegetables, according to a news release from the organization.

Drop off items in one of the collection boxes located in:

? Golden Years Plaza at 507 E. Taylor St. in DeKalb from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

? Civic Apartments at 350 N. Grant St. in Sycamore from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

? The Housing Authority Main Office at 310 N. Sixth St. in DeKalb from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

In 2006, she sold 25 percent of the work for $50 million, and MSN reports that in 2011, she was considering selling off the remainder" after becoming convinced the royalty payments she receives are ?cursed.??

The value of the remaining catalog is estimated to be worth $162 million.
