Time-lapse Tuesday: Blood meal triggers mosquito death

Sandrine Ceurstemont, video producer

Death by food? If you're a mosquito, a large blood meal could be your last, if you're subjected to a new technique developed by Roger Miesfeld and his team from University of Arizona. They found that by inhibiting a process that releases digestive enzymes, mosquitoes die within 48 hours of blood sucking. In this time-lapse, you can see treated mosquitoes on the left slowly get knocked off while untreated ones on the right continue to dance around.

The approach could be used to curb the spreading of mosquito-borne diseases like malaria. "If we can kill the mosquito after she bites the first person, she won't be able to bite and infect a second," says Miesfeld. In these tests, mosquitoes were injected with a protein that targets genes required for digestion. But the team thinks an insecticide could be developed that could be soaked into mosquito nets.

"One potential issue with our strategy is genetic changes rendering the mosquitoes immune over time," says Miesfeld. "Many approaches from many angles will be necessary and ours could be another tool."

Romney opposes debt deal

(AP) ? Mitt Romney said Monday he opposes the compromise to raise the nation's debt ceiling, becoming the second Republican presidential contender to oppose a deal backed by President Barack Obama and congressional leaders in both parties.

The plan, which supporters say is needed to avert a looming fiscal crisis, opens the door to tax increases and defense cuts, the former Massachusetts governor said in a statement.

"President Obama's leadership failure has pushed the economy to the brink at the eleventh hour and 59th minute," Romney said. "While I appreciate the extraordinarily difficult situation President Obama's lack of leadership has placed Republican members of Congress in, I personally cannot support this deal."

The statement represents the most substantive comment to date from Romney, the early frontrunner in the Republican presidential field, who has largely avoided weighing in on daily developments in the high-stakes debate. The issue, as the nation's economy in general, is likely to dominate the 2012 contest.

Obama and congressional leaders late Sunday agreed to a plan that would mix a record increase in the government's borrowing cap with the promise of more than $2 trillion in spending cuts. It must still be approved by Congress.

Like Romney, other Republican presidential hopefuls have been reluctant to comment on specific plans as the situation developed on Capitol Hill in recent days. Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty declined to address the issue personally on Monday, but criticized the deal through a spokesman.

"This deal is nothing to celebrate," Alex Conant said. "Only in Washington would the political class think it's a victory when the government narrowly avoids default, agrees to go further into debt, and does little to reform a spending system that cannot be sustained by our children and grandchildren."

He stopped short of saying Pawlenty opposes the deal. To date, only Romney and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachman have taken that position.

"Throughout this process the president has failed to lead and failed to provide a plan. The 'deal' he announced spends too much and doesn't cut enough," Bachmann said Sunday night, becoming the first high-profile Republican to denounce the compromise. "This isn't the deal the American people 'preferred' either, Mr. President. Someone has to say no. I will."

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, an early proponent of an earlier version of a debt plan backed by House Speaker John Boehner, reacted most positively. He called on Congress to approve the plan, which is expected to become law this week.

"While this framework is not my preferred outcome, it is a positive step toward cutting our nation's crippling debt," Huntsman said, offering a subtle jab at Romney, who had yet to weigh in on the issue. "While some of my opponents ducked the debate entirely, others would have allowed the nation to slide into default and President Obama refused to offer any plan, I have been proud to stand with congressional Republicans working for these needed and historic cuts."

Romney's Monday statement was his first since an appearance in Ohio last week, when he supported the "cut, cap and balance" approach that would add a balanced-budget amendment to the Constitution. The deal struck late Sunday would allow a vote on that measure, but does not require passage. Therefore, a spokesman said Romney could not support it.

When pressed, however, the Romney spokesman declined to say whether Romney would have vetoed the deal if president and thus risked defaulting on the nation's financial obligations.

Mitch McConnell: Congress 'Very Close' To A Debt Ceiling Deal

WASHINGTON -- Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said congressional negotiators are "very close" to a deal to cut spending by $3 trillion and lift the government's borrowing limit before Tuesday, the Treasury-set deadline to avoid a government default on its debts.

"We're very close. We had a very good day yesterday," McConnell said on CNN's State of the Union in response to question from host Gloria Borger.

"I think I can confidently say this debt ceiling increase will avoid default, which is important for everybody in America to know: We are not going to have a default for the first time, and we're not going to have job-killing tax increases in it, and we will deal with the problem, and that's that the government has been spending too much," McConnell said. "We're in a position where hopefully I can recommend to my members they take a serious look at it and support it."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) had initially planned a procedural vote for 1 a.m. on Sunday, but that vote was postponed by 12 hours until Sunday afternoon to give Republicans more time to negotiate with the White House.

Pressed when the deal could become law, McConnell said, "Soon. We're aware that August 2nd is a date of some significance."

As for the outlines of the deal, McConnell said it would be larger than previously reported -- $3 trillion instead of $2.4 trillion in cuts over 10 years -- and would not include any new revenues.

"We're looking at a $3 trillion package, cuts now and caps over the next ten years to hold spending in-line, and then we're also going to be voting on a constitutional amendment to balance the budget," McConnell said.

The deal under works reportedly would allow the president to lift the borrowing limit by $2.4 trillion in incremental stages so long as Congress abides by spending limits it would set for itself. A key sticking point has been enforcement of the limits; the deal will create a join committee of 12 members -- essentially a "Super Congress" -- whose budget recommendations would be fast-tracked through the regular Congress.

Following McConnell on CNN, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said specifics of the deal hadn't been nailed down, but that a deal was much closer.

"There is no final agreement. It?s premature to talk about any specifics," Schumer said. "If there?s a word here to sum up the mood, it would be relief.... Default is far less a possibility now than it was even a day ago."

The deal won't do much to jump-start the flagging economy. Economic forecasting firm Macroeconomic Advisors estimated last week that an earlier proposal for $2.2 trillion in spending cuts would slow annual economic growth by one-fourth of a percentage point through September 2015.

REALTORS? vs. Real Estate Agents | Real Estate Industry Blog

At first glance a REALTOR? and Real Estate Agent seem to be the same person. All REALTORS? are Real Estate Agents, but not all Real Estate Agents are REALTORS?. Confused?

From the Honolulu Board of Realtors and Realtor.org, ?a?REALTOR? is an individual licensed to list and sell real estate?and?is also a member of a local board of REALTORS?, the state association of REALTORS? and the National Association of REALTORS??unlike real estate agents who are simply licensed by their state to do business. As a member of these three professional trade associations, a REALTOR? agrees to adhere to a strict Code of Ethics, the canons of professional behavior that guide daily activities in the real estate business.?

On Oahu for a licensed Real Estate Agent to be considered a REALTOR?, they must become a member of the Honolulu Board of Realtors. This will also include membership to the Hawaii Association of REALTORS? and the National Association of REALTORS?.

With Real Estate Agents assisting consumers with such a large financial transaction it is very important to work with someone who holds themselves to a high level of ethics and professional conduct. The National Association of REALTORS? states that ?REALTORS? are committed to treat all parties to a transaction honestly. REALTORS? subscribe to a strict code of ethics and are expected to maintain a higher level of knowledge of the process of buying and selling real estate.?

The REALTOR? Pledge and Code of Ethics are as follows: to strive to be honorable and to abide by the Golden Rule; to strive to serve well my community, and through it, my country; to abide by the REALTORS? Code of Ethics and to strive to conform my conduct to its aspirational ideals; to act honestly in all real estate dealings; to protect the individual right of real estate ownership and to widen the opportunity to enjoy it; to seek better to represent my clients by building my knowledge and competence.

Make sure that you are not only working with a Real Estate Agent, but a REALTOR?.
