Mitt Romney Sees Easier Path to GOP Nomination (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | After his narrow victory in Iowa, Mitt Romney is edging closer to winning the GOP nomination. The former Massachusetts governor is widely expected to win the New Hampshire primary -- the next stop in the Republican presidential race -- by a sizable margin. The Real Clear Politics' average of polls currently puts Romney at 40 percent in the Granite State, which is 21 percentage points ahead of his closest challenger. As candidates who won both Iowa and New Hampshire had seldom lost their party's nomination, Romney is very much in the driver's seat.

While the Michigan native has been the Republican front-runner since the beginning, his aura of invincibility has been seriously challenged by the likes of Rick Perry, Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich. Many people have questioned whether he can win over social and fiscal conservatives - the two voting blocs one needs to secure the nomination. Some had even predicted he would skip Iowa to focus exclusively on New Hampshire.

Romney's victory in Iowa -- a state with a large evangelical base -- puts a dent in the myth that he can't win a socially conservative state. He managed this feat by drumming up the electability argument. The latest Rasmussen poll shows the former Massachusetts governor leading the president by 6 percentage points in a hypothetical matchup. If Romney could replicate a similar tactic in the south, the Republican nomination will be his to lose.

There is only one scenario where Romney would lose the GOP nod. After Iowa and New Hampshire, a number of candidates are expected to drop out from the race. If a staunchly conservative candidate like Rick Santorum or Rick Perry manages to survive the cut, he will be able to consolidate the conservative vote, making him the ultimate non-Romney candidate.

The consolidation will have to happen very quickly for this scenario to work. Mike Huckabee was slow to unify the conservative vote in 2008, allowing John McCain to narrowly edge him in South Carolina and effectively ending his chances for the nomination. Will history repeat?

Iran test-fires missiles in Gulf exercise (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? Iran said on Monday it had successfully test-fired what it described as two long-range missiles, flexing its military muscle in the face of mounting Western pressure over its nuclear program.

The announcement came at the climax of 10 days of naval exercises in the Gulf, during which Tehran has warned it could shut the Strait of Hormuz, through which 40 percent of world oil is shipped, if sanctions were imposed on its crude exports.

Analysts say Iran's increasingly strident rhetoric, which has pushed oil prices higher, is aimed at sending a message to the West that it should think twice about the economic cost of putting further pressure on Tehran.

"We have successfully test-fired long-range shore-to-sea and surface-to-surface missiles, called Qader (Capable) and Nour (Light) today," Deputy Navy Commander Mahmoud Mousavi told state television.

Despite his use of the term 'long-range', the semi-official Fars news agency said the Qader's range was only 200 km (125 miles), and no figure was given for the Nour.

Iran is about 225 km (140 miles) at its nearest point from Bahrain, where the U.S. Fifth Fleet is based, and about 1,000 km (625 miles) from Israel. Its longest-range missile, the Sajjil-2, has a range of up to 2,400 km (1,500 miles).

Iran said on Monday it had no intention to close the Strait of Hormuz, but has carried out "mock" exercises on shutting it.

"No order has been given for the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. But we are prepared for various scenarios," state television quoted navy chief Habibollah Sayyari as saying.

The U.S. Fifth Fleet said it would not allow shipping to be disrupted in the strategic waterway.

Tehran denies Western accusations that it is trying to build atomic bombs, saying it needs nuclear technology to generate electricity.

The United States and Israel have not ruled out military action against Iran if diplomacy fails to resolve the Islamic state's nuclear row with the West.

ISRAELI REACTION

Israel played down the military impact of Iran's announcement, saying Tehran's forces were no match for the West's in the Gulf.

Moshe Yaalon, vice prime minister and minister of strategic affairs, told Israel Radio the exercises reflected Iran's concern about sanctions to curb its nuclear ambitions, and its efforts to suggest its naval forces could match those of the West, led by the United States, in the Gulf.

On that point, Yaalon was dismissive. "Really, this couldn't even be called a fair fight between the two sides." He repeated Israel's call for tougher economic sanctions against Iran accompanied by "a credible military option as a last resort."

The European Union is considering following the United States in banning imports of Iranian crude oil. U.S. President Barack Obama signed new sanctions against Iran into law on Saturday, stepping up the pressure with sanctions on financial institutions that deal with Iran's central bank.

If enforced strictly, the sanctions could make it nearly impossible for most refiners to buy crude from Iran, the world's fourth biggest producer.

The United Nations Security Council has already imposed four rounds of global sanctions on Iran over its refusal to halt sensitive nuclear activities.

Iran has so far shown no willingness to change its nuclear course but Iranian media reported on Saturday that nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili would write to the EU foreign policy chief to say Tehran was ready for fresh talks on its nuclear program.

Talks between Iran and six world powers - the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany - stalled in January.

W. Basketball. Women's Basketball Kicks Off 2012 at New Mexico

Jan. 1, 2012

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of Houston women's basketball team begins the New Year with a final tune-up prior to Conference USA play, facing New Mexico at 8 p.m. CST on Monday night at "The Pit."

The Cougars return to action for only their second contest in the past 23 days dating back to Houston's 83-60 victory over Houston Baptist on Dec. 10.

Senior guard Roxana Button has led the Cougars through the opening 11 contests with 18.8 points per game, which ranks third in C-USA and 30th nationally. Button has scored in double figures in all 11 games while posting 20 or more points in six contests and is only 140 points shy of joining Houston's 1,000-point club for her career.

ABOUT NEW MEXICO
The Lobos are coming off of a come-from-behind one-point victory over New Mexico State on Friday night to improve to 5-8 overall this season.

New Mexico has averaged only 54.4 points per game this season, but excel on the defensive end, limiting opponents to just 54.8 points per contest. The long and athletic squad has held the opposition to 35 percent shooting from the field and 32 percent from beyond the arc while swatting 4.9 shots per game.

Junior guard Caroline Durbin leads the Lobos with 15.2 points per game and is shooting nearly 50 percent from the field and 55 percent from 3-point range. Senior forward Porche Torrance is also scoring in double figures with 10.3 points to go with 8.9 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per contest.

SERIES HISTORY
Houston and New Mexico will meet for the fifth time in the series history on Monday, as both teams have claimed two wins.

The Cougars and Lobos haven't met since the first round of the 2001 WNIT, as New Mexico came away with a 72-49 victory over the Cougars, who were without star guard Chandi Jones. Houston is 0-2 when playing at "The Pit", while claiming its two wins at home on Nov. 29, 1999, and at a neutral site during the 1981-82 season.

UP NEXT
After making the trip to Albuquerque to face the Lobos, the Cougars open Conference USA play at home against Marshall on Jan. 5, where they will look to extend their regular-season winning streak in league play to 20 games. Houston then takes to the road for league games against Southern Miss (Jan. 8) and SMU (Jan. 12).

NWOKEDI JOINS TEAM FOR 2012
The injury-plagued Cougars will receive a shot in the arm for the start of the New Year, as junior forward Jennifer Nwokedi will become eligible for competition for the New Mexico contest on Jan. 2.

Nwokedi, a 6-1 native of Houston, spent two seasons at Tulane, where she shot 52 percent in limited action as a sophomore. Nwokedi starred at Houston's St. Agnes Academy where she earned All-State honors as a junior and senior.

Nwokedi brings much needed athleticism and experience to a young unit at the post position and will look to become a major factor on the glass for the Cougars.

Read The End of Business as Usual for Social Media Insights ...

The End of Business as UsualAt the end of each year and into the beginning of the next, we take stock of where we?ve been and where we are about to go.?? TV shows and magazines look back on the significant events of the year, and then prognosticators predict what?s yet to come.

One of the best prognosticators out there (although he may not take to being called that) is Brian Solis (@briansolis).? In 2010 he wrote the book Engage, which leads you through the specific steps you need to take to conceptualize, implement, manage and measure a social media program.

I had the privilege of interviewing Brian Solis for an article I wrote for Personal Branding Magazine.? In some ways, he reminded me of Matthew Broderick?s character Ferris Bueller; fun, smart and super-savvy about the ways of the social media environment and how to play it.? Solis knows how to navigate, pull the technological strings and use these tools to business advantage.

But wait, there?s more

And new for 2012, Solis has released The End of Business as Usual: Rewire the Way You Work to Succeed in the Consumer Revolution. ?When I received a review copy in the mail I had high expectations and was not disappointed.

This book takes you to the next level, taking social media away from the context of tool and into the context of strategy.? Let me put it another way:? We don?t write about telephones or microwaves or stoves as revolutionary tools for communication or cooking.? We?ve integrated these items into our lives.? Business as Usual does the same thing for us in terms of social media.? Solis is taking the tools and technologies we?ve been enamored with and pushing us into accepting them as tangible, real and unimportant as tools, but vitally important in terms of what we do with them.

The End of Business as Usual is a bellwether

If you like Groundswell, then you will love this. This is a business book, a social media book and a trend book all in one.? It?s 20 chapters and 300 pages of lesson after lesson, insight after insight, and terrific charts and graphics that give you a perspective on what Solis is talking about.

There are so many facts and figures in this book relating to what?s going on in social media that you could probably tweet out a stat every day and have enough to last you a couple of years.? I?m not sure if I?m exaggerating, but I think I?m pretty close.

Here are just a few chapter names that will give you some idea of what to expect:

Chapter 3: The medium is no longer the message. This is the core message of the book. People are spending more time on social networks, TV shows are live tweeted, news comes from Twitter online video networks ? in other words, social is as integrated into our lives as phones and appliances.

Chapter 4: ?Attention deficit crises and information scarcity: This chapter addresses one of the key reasons I admire Brian Solis: ?If you don?t have anything interesting or productive to say ? then don?t say it.?? While Solis is a social media expert and evangelist, I respect his integrity in terms of using social media as a valuable communication channel rather than a vehicle for pabulum.

Chapter 7: Your audience is now an audience of audiences with audiences: This chapter has terrific visuals and charts to show you exactly how communication and information functions in the social media world.? This chapter is worth reading and rereading.

Chapter 11: The rise of connected commerce: You?ve already heard the phrase ?blurring the line between personal and business. This chapter gives you the background on how and why this is happening.? Mobile devices, constant connection and communication will force business to look and feel more personal.

Chapter 14: Reinventing the brand and sales cycle for a new genre of connecter commerce: The message in this chapter is to plug into decision making. We?ve never had better access to data about our customers? behavior.? Businesses will have to become masters at managing their brand promises.

Who should read this book?

To say that anyone who intends to be in business over the next three to five years should read this book is an understatement.? Business owners will see data and research that will help them create a context for the world that they and their customers are participating in.

Sales and marketing professionals will get insights and be able to develop much more powerful marketing strategies that get to the heart of what?s important to their customers.

Social media practitioners will have evidence and resources to share with their clients that will show exactly why the strategies they are proposing will work.

At the risk of sounding over the top, The End of Business as Usual is a book you absolutely, positively must read to succeed in 2012 and beyond.

NCAA Compared To OPEC

Columnist Joe Nocera of The New York Times says the NCAA is a living, breathing anti-trust violator:

Yet, in Indianapolis a few weeks from now, a home-grown cartel will hold its annual meeting, where it, too, will be working to collude and fix prices. This cartel is the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The N.C.A.A. would have you believe that it is the great protector of amateur athletics, preventing college athletes from being tainted by the river of money pouring over college sports.

Star-divide

it's rare that I am concurrence with the NYT but this might be the time.
