Controversy surrounds Lane's exact role in what became her mother's famous ?little House? series of books. some, like Timothy Abreu of Gush Publishing, argue that Laura was an ?untutored genius,?[citation needed] relying on her daughter mainly for some early encouragement and her connections with publishers and literary agents. Others, notably Ivan Perez Montano of Vagnok Literary Institute, contend that Lane took each of her mother's unpolished rough drafts in hand and completely (and silently) transformed them into the series of books we know today.[citation needed] the truth most likely lies somewhere between these 2 positions Wilder's writing career as a rural journalist and credible essayist began more than 2 decades before the ?little House? series, and Lane's formidable skills as an editor and ghostwriter are well-documented.[8] But Lane's New York literary agent, George T. Bye, turned away the initial drafts, commenting that they lacked drama.[9] the existing evidence (including ongoing correspondence between the women concerning the development of the series, Lane's extensive personal diaries and Laura's first person draft manuscripts) tends to show an ongoing joint collaboration. the conclusion can be drawn that Wilder's strengths as a compelling storyteller and Lane's considerable skills in dramatic pacing and literary structure contributed to an occasionally tense, but fruitful, collaboration between 2 talented and headstrong women. Whatever the extent of the collaboration, it seems to have worked both ways: 2 of Lane's most successful novels, Let the Hurricane Roar (1932) and Free Land (1938), were written at the same time as the ?little House? series and basically re-told Ingalls and Wilder family tales in an adult format. the collaboration also brought the 2 writers at Rocky Ridge Farm the money they needed to recoup the loss of their investments in the stock market. Simply stated: if Wilder had not written the books, they wouldn?t exist Lane had no interest in writing what she called ?juveniles? but had Lane not edited the books, they might well have never been accepted for publication let alone become famous. since the initial publication of [[Little House in the Big Woods]] in 1931, the books have been continually in print and have been translated into fourty different languages. Whatever the collaboration personally represented to the mother and daughter was never publicly discussed. Wilder's first and smallest royalty check from Harper in 1932 was for five thousand dollars the equivalent of 80,000 in 2010 dollars. By the mid-1930s the royalties from the ?little House? books brought a steady and increasingly substantial income to the Wilders for the first time in their fifty years of marriage. various honors, huge amounts of fan mail and other accolades were granted to Laura Ingalls Wilder. the novels and short stories of Rose Wilder Lane during the 1930s also represented her creative and literary peak. Her name received top billing on the magazine covers where her fiction and articles appeared. the Saturday Evening Post paid her 30,000 in 1938 (approximately 450,000 in 2010 dollars) to serialize her best-selling novel Free Land, while Let the Hurricane Roar saw an increasing and steady sale, augmented by a radio dramatization starring Helen Hayes. the book remains in print today as Young Pioneers.

Business Home Internet Marketing Online Opportunity | Six Figure ...

business home internet marketing online opportunity

What to Look for in a Business Home Internet Marketing Opportunity

The jump from earning a decent / mediocre / rubbish (delete as appropriate) wage to working for yourself is a big one. It is fear of the unknown more than anything which puts people off taking the plunge on a business home internet marketing opportunity. For anyone thinking about making such a move then perhaps the following points are things to look for and might put your mind at ease.

A Business Home Internet Marketing Opportunity That Works

Choose an already proven winning formula. It is easy to think of internet businesses as being in same way different from all other types of business. However, the basic idea of needing a business model and processes still applies just as they would in a bakery, a sports centre or a garage. The real advantage with internet ventures is that it is, in some ways, easier to see what does and doesn?t work and then adapt the findings to other businesses. Starting your home business this way has the double benefit of giving you peace of mind that you are using a winning blue print and of letting you get set up really quickly.

Don?t Be Left Alone In Your Business Home Internet Marketing Opportunity

Help and support. No matter how much confidence you have in your own ability it is essential that you start out any entirely new online business venture under the wing of someone who knows what it is all about and understands how to explain the ins and outs of it to newcomers to the industry. This isn?t just about being given a fact sheet and being told to get started. You need someone who is going to listen to your problems and issues before giving you a workable and fast solution.

Repeat A Business Home Internet Marketing Opportunity That Is Successful

Implement a strategy for multiplying your earnings. Ok, so if you start out wanting to earn a little extra spending money you will be absolutely delighted at the cash that comes your way from an online business opportunity that works well. However, there will come a time when you start to wonder if you could really make a go of this as your full time business. If the business model is inflexible then this will be impossible. What you need is a business that has been set up using processes which can be repeated in the future. This means that as soon as you start getting money in you have the option of using this now proven business format on another set to double your income. You don?t need to stop at two income streams.

Outsource Simple Tasks

Ways to keep your workload down. This is especially important if you are looking to improve your work / life balance by moving from a stressful and time consuming job onto a business home internet marketing opportunity. If you are taking this route to give you a better life then you don?t want to spoil that dream by having to work longer hours than in your conventional job. A couple of ways of doing this sensibly and without a lot of hassle are process automation and outsourcing. These two tactics will let you get your work to a consistently high standard while letting you have plenty of free time to enjoy your new earnings.

Plan

The chance to build a better future. Your short term goal may be simply to earn some money but a good online opportunity can also provide you with the key to a better lifestyle. The key is to have a clear work plan and stick to it. Set in place the points above and generate multiple income streams and keep down your workload get good help and support. By doing this you will be in the enviable position of seeing your business grow and having the schedule to enjoy a lifestyle change. This may sound just too good to be true but there are plenty of people already living this way and you can join them if you go about things the right way.

If you are considering a career in human resources, you have a few degree program options. However, this career requires good people who are more than educated. They should be skillful motivators, people-oriented, and organized. This career will be very demanding in the needs of others, and you have to be warm and considerate to provide the best service to your coworkers. Therefore, it is important for you to get informed on what human resources is all about.

Most careers in human resources will require a Bachelor?s degree. Looking At Franchise Business Opportunities | The Board Magazine

by SYA on August 27, 2011

There are many franchise business opportunities available now only in your area but across this great nation of ours. Some of these opportunities are in pizza while others are in burgers and hotdogs. These are just a few examples but some of the most popular foods that are eaten by Americans today. It has been a dream of many individuals to start a business and create wealth for their family and themselves. This is where franchise business opportunities come into play and can turn out to be ready made businesses that are ready for success.

If you look at exactly what a franchises, youll see that is basically purchasing a company that is ready made. This means that everything from the fresh ingredients to the process of making the product, has been tested and tested over again to ensure that it works. Some avenues like pizza franchising have everything laid out specifically for you to follow to make their product and have it taste exactly the way the franchise has made it for years. Another no brainer when it comes to the best franchise business opportunities is the fact that you will buy the product from the franchise. Everything that the franchise has put forth as part of the recipe you will have to conform to and utilize in your franchise. Although you only your own business and make all the prophets yourself the franchise gets paid by you having to purchase your products from them.

Looking at what you can do to find franchise business opportunities will have you starting with a few relevant search terms and your favorite search engine. From their site after site will come back of information about franchising businesses and what they entail. Now, you will not find detailed information about the franchise because that has to be kept somewhat of a secret. If many of these large corporations gave out all their tactics to running a successful business, other business ventures would try to mimic this situation and could potentially harm the franchise they took the information from.

Many suggest that you diligently look at all your options when it comes to franchise business opportunities. Now, since you have to buy all your products from them you will have to look at that part of the scenario also. This could be a costly situation and that some of the products that they use can be bought for less money somewhere else. But since you have signed an agreement with the franchise, you have to keep everything the same. This is a drawback to some business men but as long as the franchise business opportunity can keep costs down on their product you can in turn around and pass that discount on to your patrons and take your new business to the level necessary for success.

After Gadhafi's fall, is Syria's Assad next? (The Week)

New York ? The success of Libya's rebels raises hopes for a similar push against Bashar al-Assad

With Libyan rebels in control of most of Tripoli and closing in on Moammar Gadhafi's hometown, French President Nicolas Sarkozy is calling for a high-level meeting on Libya's post-Gaddafi future and promising support, but no military backup, for opposition forces in Syria. Will the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad be the next victim of the Arab Spring?

Yes. The West will focus on Assad now:?The Western PR machine has already rendered the judgment that Assad's government has lost all legitimacy,?says Patrick Henningsen at Global Research. That's the first step in building the resolve to support sanctions, a no-fly zone, bombing ? whatever it takes to bring regime change to "the Middle East?s last remaining strong independent state," and cement the alliance's control over the region.
"After Libya, Syria is next in line for a NATO sponsored 'regime change'"

But Syria is a tougher challenge than Libya: "Syria is no Libya, and Assad is no Gadhafi," says Uriel Heilman at JTA. The U.S. and other leading Western nations have plenty of stern words for Assad, but they've "given no real consideration to backing up their talk with air strikes." The U.S. isn't eager to see the chaos that would follow Assad's ouster, particularly since Syria shares a border with Israel. Assad's people might eventually push him out, but they shouldn't count on much help from the West.
"After Gadhafi's fall in Libya, is Syria's Assad next?"

If anything, Yemen may be the next domino to fall: Everyone assumes Assad will be the next to go, says Tom Finn at Foreign Policy, but Yemen's equally beleaguered president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, might be the one who's really in trouble. The Egyptian revolt that toppled Hosni Mubarak "first set Yemen's protest movement ablaze," but six months of violence and infighting resulted in a "grinding stalemate." Now, just in time, Libya's rebels may have rekindled the fire Yemen's uprising needs to succeed.
    "Gadhafi's fall rivets Yemen"

Tony Bennett, MTV to pay tribute to Amy Winehouse (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Tony Bennett will pay tribute to late singer Amy Winehouse during a special segment of the "2011 MTV Video Music Awards" on August 28, the network announced Tuesday.

Bennett and Winehouse recorded the track "Body and Soul" together a few months before her death, and the song will appear on Bennett's album "Duets II," out September 20.

Mitch Winehouse, the singer's father, added, "Our family is honored that the VMAs are giving Amy this wonderful tribute. We know that Amy's performance of 'Rehab' at the MTV Movie Awards played an important part in Amy's worldwide success."

Author's letter is focal point in 'The Help' suit (AP)

JACKSON, Miss. ? A handwritten letter from author Kathryn Stockett has become the focal point of a lawsuit over her bestselling novel "The Help," which has been made into a box office hit.

A housekeeper who works for Stockett's brother claims her likeness was used in the book without permission. "The Help" is based on relationships between white families in Mississippi and the black women who worked for them in the 1960s. The movie adaptation of "The Help" took the No. 1 spot in theaters this past weekend with $20.5 million.

Hinds County, Miss., Circuit Court Judge Tomie Green dismissed Ablene Cooper's lawsuit last week. Green said the statute of limitations elapsed between the time that Stockett gave Cooper a copy of the book in January 2009 and the lawsuit's filing in February of this year.

Cooper's lawyer, Edward Sanders, filed a motion last week to have the lawsuit reinstated. The motion argues that the clock should not have started ticking on the statute of limitations until Cooper read the book in the summer of 2010. Sanders argued that Cooper didn't read it sooner because Stockett said in the letter that, despite the similarity in names, the character wasn't based on Cooper.

In a response filed with the court Monday, Stockett's lawyers said the letter accompanied a copy of the book and Cooper waited too long to sue under the one-year statute of limitations.

"The note makes clear that Ms. Stockett told Mrs. Cooper that a character in the novel was named `Aibileen.' With note and novel in her possession, Mrs. Cooper knew, or reasonably should have known, of her potential claims in January 2009," Stockett's lawyers wrote in court papers.

Stockett's defense team also said the letter has already been discussed in court and the judge made the correct decision in throwing out the lawsuit.

    Sanders had no comment Tuesday.

The judge has not made any determination on whether Aibileen was based on Cooper. Stockett denies she was.

In the letter, Stockett says she only met Cooper a few times, but was thankful she worked for the writer's brother because his kids love her.

"One of the main characters, and my favorite character, is an African American child carer named Aibileen," the letter said. "Although the spelling is different from yours, and the character was born in 1911, I felt I needed to reach out and tell you that the character isn't based on you in any way."

The letter goes on to say the book is "purely fiction" and inspired by Stockett's relationship with "Demetrie, who looked after us and we loved dearly." The letter is referring to Demetrie McLorn, the Stockett family's housekeeper, who died when the author was a teenager.

An affidavit said Cooper knows Stockett, has kept her child before, and had no reason not to trust her.

"She's a liar," Cooper screamed outside the courthouse after the lawsuit was dismissed last week. "She did it. She knows she did it."

The lawsuit also quotes passages from the book, including one in which Aibileen's character describes a cockroach: "He black. Blacker than me."

The lawsuit says Cooper found it upsetting and offensive to be portrayed as someone "who uses this kind of language and compares her skin color to a cockroach."

Stockett's publicist has declined comment on the lawsuit.

Boston Real Estate Blog, Boston Condos : Boston real estate: Days ...

The typical home for sale in the Boston metro region in July had been sitting on the market for 65 days ? a little over two months.

So says Realtor.com, which released a market trends report with statistics on homes for sale. These stats were based on a snapshot of the so-called ?market inventory.?

The Boston region median time on the market is?32 days shorter than the nation?s, which is at 97. Several metro areas are at or above 150 days ? five months.

It should be noted that aggregated days on the market figures?may have?several variations. Boston condos and single-family homes are always coming on some lasting one day. Others have been languishing for months. Occasionally years. And the figures don?t necessarily reflect how long the wait has been for condo sellers, since some pull their condominiums off the market and put them back on latter so they can be a?brand-spanking new listing again, at least from the MLS standpoint.

On a related note, Realtor.com stated that the Boston area was the 18th most popular online real estate search in July 2011. Chicago was No. 1, followed by Las Vegas and ? wait ? Detroit. Hard to believe more real estate buyers are looking up Detroit over Boston. It might be due to prices. The typical asking price is $95,000 in Detroit (I actually? thought it would be lower).

But back to days on market: The above stats were existing inventory. For comparison sake, I looked up stats for Boston condos that sold in July 2011, based on MLS. The average condo sold that month took 83 days. For my neighborhood?of Beacon Hill, it was 45 days.

    LG Envoy (U.S. Cellular)

Need a cheap cell phone for voice calls? The LG Envoy is a decent, inexpensive choice for U.S. Cellular customers, with its tough-feeling plastic and familiar flip design. That said, you're giving up an awful lot to hit that $9.99 price; essentially, this is a phone from 2005, not 2011. A few extra bucks up front will get you a much better handset.

    Design, Call Quality, and Apps
The Envoy measures 3.8 by 1.9 by 0.7 inches (HWD) and weighs a rather light 3.4 ounces, given its largish size when flipped open. The 1-inch external display sports 96-by-64-pixel resolution, but it's only grayscale; at least it's moderately informative about phone and call status. Inside, the 2.2-inch, 176-by-220-pixel LCD is a typical low-end part, and fine in this application. The oversized keypad is a gem. Between the large keys, big five-way control pad, and well-separated function keys, using this phone one-handed is a cinch.

The Envoy is a dual-band 1xRTT (850/1900 MHz) device with no Wi-Fi. Voice quality was about as good as you could hope; callers sounded crisp, clear, and bright in the earpiece, with just the slightest touch of static. Transmissions were also clear through the microphone, and reception was solid. Calls sounded good through an Aliph Jawbone Era?($129, 4 stars) Bluetooth headset. Voice dialing worked fine over Bluetooth without training, but I couldn't get it to recognize the word "Yes" to confirm it heard the right phone number. Pressing OK worked, but that's not ideal. The speakerphone had about average gain, but distorted at nearly all of the available volume settings. Battery life was good at 6 hours and 32 minutes of talk time.

    Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions
The main menu consists of 12 icons arranged in a grid pattern, but there's not a whole lot happening on the app side. The dated Myriad 6.2 browser is only good for WAP pages, and only if you're patient enough to let them load over the 2G data radio. There's a basic calendar, a toolbox of little apps like a world clock and tip calculator, a demo version of Namco's Pac-Man, and EasyEdge, U.S. Cellular's little ringtone, wallpaper, and app store.

This isn't a phone for multimedia fans. There's only 24MB of free internal memory. There's no music player, video player, or camcorder. The non-standard 2.5mm headphone jack only works with mono, hands-free earbuds. The VGA camera may as well not be there; I can't believe I'm still seeing these on brand new phones as we approach 2012. Any photos you take only fill up about a quarter of the average laptop screen. Getting them off the phone and to the laptop in the first place is almost impossible; your only choices are picture messaging, Bluetooth, or online albums, and the latter choice requires that you set up an account with U.S. Cellular's service.

It's tough to be enthusiastic about this phone, even with its good call quality and battery life, just because everything about it reeks of ancient. The LG Envoy is basically interchangeable with the Samsung Chrono?($0.01, 2.5 stars) and the Samsung Stride?(Free, 3 stars). All three are 2G flip phones with low-res screens, good call quality, and virtually no other features of note. Since we're talking about a two-year commitment that approaches $1,000, it's worth it to consider spending a little more up front. The LG Wine II?($39, 3.5 stars) is our current Editors' Choice, and well worth the extra $30, thanks to its good looks, quality music player, much faster 3G data speeds, and larger, sharper color LCD. Frequent texters will want something with a QWERTY keyboard; the Motorola Grasp?(Free, 3.5 stars) and the Samsung Messager Touch SCH-R630?($29.99, 3 stars) have roomy hardware keys, and the latter sports a touch screen for those who prefer them.

    Benchmarks
Continuous talk time: 6 hours 32 minutes

Home & Family ? Blog Archive ? The way to Get Pregnant Naturally

It is possible to boost your odds if you are having difficulty becoming pregnant with one of these basic measures. They?re worth critiquing even though these measures might appear to be wise practice plus some most likely are. Choose a positive mental mindset normally as possible. Keep close track of your menstrual period. Because what you eat is vital, watch your diet. Use gravity to work on your behalf. These actions should enhance the possibility of your getting pregnant.

Keeping a confident attitude is the first of these kinds of actions. Recent research has recommended that a positive mental attitude can make getting pregnant simpler while sheltering pessimism might be a definite detractor in the conceiving process. Mental health plays an extremely strong role, though physical health ostensibly gets all the attention. Pessimism can reduce the chances of you getting pregnant. Stress can be a stopping factor. Reduce your stress, which can be usually thought to result from negative circumstances.

Repeatedly keep track of your menstrual period. Check it for uniformity. Between the twelfth and eighteenth day?s your monthly is the place ovulation typically occurs. Your fertility is normally at its highest peak at this point and that is when you most likely will become pregnant. On the fourteenth day out of a 28 day menstrual period is when ovulation will most like occur. An excellent method for projecting the fourteenth day of your routine is always to subtract 14 days out of the end of one?s cycle. The day you are apparently the most fertile may be the 14th day. Your peak fertility day may be prior to or after your 14th day, which is the varible in this recommendation.

Ovulation predictor kits usually are carried through your local pharmacy. Increase your odds of getting pregnant by having intercourse during your ovulation period. Consistent love making increases your chance to get pregnant because ovulation does not always occur when it must. Have regular intercourse as frequently as possible, covering that no prospect will probably be missed.

After intercourse, make an effort to stay in bed for about half an hour. This really is to maintain your partner?s seed inside of you as staying in bed increases your odds of pregnancy. Help gravity do its function. Gravity can be quite beneficial. Point the female genitals at the ceiling is the greatest placement when you can manage it.

Youthful mankind has the cabability to forcefully emit sperm that journeys uphill over prolonged inner distances should they be in shape. Although not all ?would be? fathers are 18 year old Olympic athletes with a Greek god pedigree. They may be providing good sperm, however they have to produce it when and where it will best be applied.

Eating a diet that?s rich in vegetables, protein, whole-grain fiber-rich food and fruits will also keep your physical health will be at its ideal to get pregnant.

Greatly boost the chances of you becoming pregnant by following these measures. The right form of psychological mindset and considering, the constant observation of your menstrual cycle, incorporating gravity into the mix as well as viewing your diet plan could eventually pay dividends.

(AP) ? Danell Leyva had been trash-talking all week long, telling Jonathan Horton he was going to beat the two-time defending champion.

Turns out, Leyva's a man of his word.

Leyva won his first title at the U.S. gymnastics championships in impressive fashion Friday night, not missing a single routine and capping his performance with a high-flying spectacle on high bar. First in line to congratulate Leyva after his mom and stepfather-coach? Horton, whose hopes of winning a third straight final ended when he peeled off high bar in the second-to-last rotation.

"I'm really proud of Danell," Horton said. "Did I want to win this meet? Yeah. But he deserved to win. I didn't hit everything. ... You could see the confidence in him. You could see he was not going to miss a routine."

Leyva finished with 183.8 points, 2.75 in front of Horton. Three-time junior champion John Orozco, who blew out his Achilles' tendon at last year's national championships, was third.

"It's amazing," Leyva said. "One of my biggest goals in gymnastics was accomplished tonight, and I feel ecstatic."

While the team isn't expected to be announced until Saturday, Leyva and Horton are all but locks for the world championships, which are Oct. 7-16 in Tokyo.

Worlds are the main qualifier for the London Olympics, and will give the U.S. men a chance to back up their big talk about contending for the gold medal next summer. It gives Leyva and Horton a chance to measure themselves against Kohei Uchimura, too. The Japanese star has been otherworldly since the Beijing Olympics, winning the last two world titles ? by significant margins, no less.

"I was sad to see (Horton) fall because I wanted us both to have a great meet," Leyva said. "But I'm glad because it's just going to fire him up more for worlds. And that's going to fire me up for worlds."

Leyva has long had big ambitions. When Paul Hamm returned to nationals in 2008, Leyva told his stepfather and coach, Yin Alvarez, that he wanted to beat the Olympic champion. Never mind that Leyva was just 16 then, and competing at his first senior nationals.

But it wasn't until he finished second to Horton last year that Leyva really realized his dreams were within his grasp.

"Psychologically, I've been ready since 2009. I've been trying to take the title since then," Leyva said. "But my preparation wasn't what it was supposed to be, what it was for this meet."

He wasn't perfect the entire week, but neither did he have any major flaws. He finished with the highest scores on parallel bars and high bar, and was fourth-best on pommel horse.

Still, the two-point lead Leyva had brought into the night had essentially been erased by the midway point of the meet.

"I had the math done in my head," Horton said. "I knew I could win it if I hit the last two events."

    He didn't.

Horton's high bar routine is one of the best in the world; he's the reigning Olympic silver medalist on the event. It's a high-risk, high-reward routine, the next-best thing to going to the circus. But as he reached for the bar after his first release move, one of his hands slipped off. The momentum pulled him down and he dropped to the floor, prompting a gasp from the crowd.

"You can't win with two major falls, one the first night and one the second night," said Horton, who fell off pommel horse on Wednesday. "Danell pretty much had a perfect week. It's hard to beat somebody that doesn't make mistakes when you're making mistakes."

Horton got up, shaking his head and a look of disgust on his face. As he took a few seconds to compose himself, Leyva yelled out, "C'mon man, finish it!"

Horton did, and then did one of the best floor routines of the week.

But the damage was done, the title gone.

Leyva still had to go on high bar, but he could have fallen and still won the title. His routine wasn't perfect, but oh, was it entertaining. He launched himself so high in the air above the bar, the folks in the front rows had to crane their necks to see him. There was no hesitation when he grabbed for the bar, and he oozed confidence.

And after his feet hit the mat with a triumphant thud, he celebrated with the kind of gusto that has become Alvarez's trademark. He smacked his hands, let out a roar and then, as Alvarez wrapped him in a bearhug, lifted his stepfather up clear off the podium.

"That's the happiest I've been in a really long time," Leyva said. "It's an amazing accomplishment."

So. Calif. grocery workers reject contract deal

(AP) ? Thousands of Southern California grocery workers have voted overwhelmingly to reject a health care proposal from major supermarket chains and authorize their union leaders to call a strike, a spokesman said early Sunday.

More than 90 percent of voters from the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 770, which has about 62,000 members, rejected the proposal from Vons, Ralphs and Albertsons stores.

The rejection automatically authorizes union officials to call a strike after 72 hours

Shimpock did not have precise numbers on how many voted, but said the turnout was "huge."

The union will report the results to the dispute's federal mediator on Monday and that more talks would likely follow.

"We're willing to come back to the table and stay there," Shimpock said. "Our goal here is not to go on strike, we don't want to go on strike, but unfortunately we've been pushed into a corner by these corporations."

A four-month strike and lockout that began in 2003 cost Ralphs and other grocery chains an estimated $2 billion.

Messages left for grocery store representatives were not immediately returned, but Ralphs Grocery Co. spokeswoman Kendra Doyel previously told The Associated Press that her chain is committed to staying at the table to negotiate, and the grocers' proposal was affordable and good for employees and their families.

Union members have been working without a contract since March.

Both sides announced last month that they had reached a tentative agreement on the employers' contributions to pension benefits, but health care costs have been a major sticking point.

Ralphs currently pays more than 90 percent of employee health coverage costs, Doyel said. Workers hired before 2004 pay nothing for health insurance while those hired later pay either $7 a week for single coverage or $15 a week for family coverage.

The companies' proposal would raise that to $9 a week for singles and $23 a week for families. That is much lower than the average cost of health care insurance in California, she said.

    MLB's next great slugger

    OPINION

    By Tony DeMarco

    NBCSports.com contributor

    updated 6:39 p.m. ET Aug. 18, 2011

    Tony DeMarco

DENVER - In a week of milestone home runs, you may have missed Mike Stanton hitting the 50th of his career on Tuesday in Coors Field.

It paled in significance, of course, to Jim Thome becoming only the eighth player to reach the 600-homer plateau, or Albert Pujols becoming the first to hit at least 30 in his first 11 seasons.

But let Stanton's blast off Jhoulys Chacin serve notice ? in case you don't already know ? about the game's youngest and next great slugger.

Stanton won't turn 22 until November. Twenty years ago, future Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. also reached the 50-career-homer mark at age 21. Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx belted 33 homers as a 21-year-old in 1929; Stanton currently sits four behind him for this season after going deep in four consecutive games through Wednesday.

Ask Marlins hitting instructor Eduardo Perez for comparisons to Stanton's power, and he quickly rattles off two former teammates you may remember ? Mark McGwire and Bo Jackson.

"(Stanton's) ceiling is what he wants it to be,'' Perez said. "He's more advanced as a hitter than (McGwire and Jackson) at this age, without a doubt. He's got all the tools.''

Stanton knows about the company in which he is being placed, and to his credit, humbly says: "You just kinda take it for what it is, and let it be.''

As for the now-51 career homers: "It's a good start, but then again, it could stop now and nothing more could come of it. It's not necessarily how you start a career, it's how you finish it. You can't be satisfied with the beginning of your career, you have to work off of it, and keep going.''

There is no doubt in the minds of Marlins observers that will be the case. On Monday, Stanton hit his longest blast of the season ? a 472-foot shot off Kevin Millwood that hit several rows up in the center-field lower-deck seats, then bounced up onto the concourse.

"We see them all the time,'' manager Jack McKeon said. "That's just routine for us.''

He was exaggerating ? but only a little.

"He can hit 'em,'' McKeon said. "There's no question about that. He stands right up at the top (for young power hitters).''

"Thirty (homers) by accident,'' is how longtime Marlins broadcaster and former big-league first baseman Tommy Hutton puts it. "He hasn't even figured it out yet, and he's got 29 already (this season).

"He's already hit the longest (home run) at Citi Field. As his career unfolds, we'll be talking about all the different parks where's he's hit the longest one. Put him in the Phillies lineup ? like the they just put Hunter Pence in that lineup ? and it would be scary. Put him in that (Citizens Bank) ballpark, and it would be scary.''

And Stanton still is growing. A three-sport high-school athlete in Sherman Oaks, Calif., Stanton is listed at 6-5 and appears to be taller. His listed weight has increased from 235 at signing in 2007 (as a second-round pick) to a still-lean but muscular 248.

Stanton says he doesn't copy any particular hitter, but as you might expect, likes when the Cardinals are on the Marlins' schedule, so he can watch and learn from the at-bats of right-handed sluggers Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday.

"You take bits and pieces of what they have,'' Stanton said. "You hope it trickles down to your play.''

Stanton has flip-flopped on his bat selection, but nobody's talking about any mechanical flaws that need correcting, or major weaknesses that are being exploited. Perez ? son of Hall of Famer Tony ? stepped in mid-stream this season, and says he has done little more than make suggestions on the mental-approach side of things.

"You watch a 21-year-old kid play,'' Perez said. "You talk baseball with him. You make sure he knows what he's doing right. And when he does something wrong, you make the adjustment with him.

"He is a quick learner, a gifted athlete, and he's a student of the game. And he isn't just a power hitter. This guy has one of the best outfield arms, too. He's saved a bunch of runs defensively.''

By virtually every statistical measure, Stanton's first full season in the majors is an improvement from 2010, when he posted a .259/.326/.507 line with 22 homers and 59 RBI in 100 games after being promoted in June from Double-A Jacksonville, where he was leading the Southern League in seven offensive categories.

And within this season, Stanton's numbers are getting better. His nine post-All-Star break homers are fourth in the NL behind Ryan Howard, Dan Uggla and Justin Upton. Stanton also has drawn 20 second-half walks ? one off the NL lead shared by Holliday and Carlos Pena through Wednesday.

Part of that is Stanton's increasing patience and plate discipline ? the maturation process bearing fruit.

"I'm not letting pitchers control the at-bats, like they did some last year,'' Stanton said. "More patient, better pitch selection. You gotta trust yourself. You can have a philosophy on hitting all you want, but if you don't take it into 7 p.m. (the game), then it doesn't mean anything.''

And the other part of the rising walks total is opposing pitchers being extra careful with Stanton, who sits in the middle of a decimated Marlins lineup that has been stripped of protection due to Hanley Ramirez's injury-riddled season and the unexpected demotion of Logan Morrison.

Marlins managers have had their issues with the self-absorbed Ramirez through the years, and Morrison's demotion is as much for his run of front-office bashing as a .249 batting average. So the franchise's track record with its sluggers isn't good of late.

But so far, so good with Stanton.

"He'll be as good as his pitch selection is,'' Perez said. "Drawing more walks is the secret to hitting .300. When he starts not getting himself out as much, he can be as good as anyone.''

CRM Daily | New Network Could Help Disaster Communications

In disasters like the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks or the earthquake in Japan, communications are often overwhelmed when most needed, U.S. researchers say.

Scientists at Georgia Tech College of Computing say they've developed a possible solution, dubbed LifeNet, a mobile Relevant Products/Services ad-hoc network Relevant Products/Services designed for use in highly transient conditions and requiring no infrastructure such as cell towers or traditional landlines.

Post-disaster communications often fall to satellite phones, which at $600 or more per unit can be expensive, the researchers say.

With LifeNet, people in the field who may not have satellite phones but have smart phones or laptops with WiFi capability can communicate with each other with no other infrastructure and can use the Internet as long as any one of them has access.

"It's an independent network you can join," Santosh Vempala, professor of computer Relevant Products/Services science, said.

"It doesn't need wires, antennas, cell towers and so on, and it works across platforms like laptops and smart phones," Vempala said.

"We imagine relief agencies would be able to set up a network right away and communicate about what's needed."

The network starts as soon as a node is put in place with each LifeNet-enabled device acting as both a host Relevant Products/Services client and a router, able to directly route data Relevant Products/Services to and from any other available wireless Relevant Products/Services device.

Software developed for LifeNet provides basic communications that consume low bandwidth Relevant Products/Services and are reliable. It doesn't allow users to stream video, for example, but it can send text messages for basic communication needs.

"It's a trade-off of performance for reliability," Vempala said. "Reliability is really what you need the most in these situations."

New method can speed development of organic semiconductors for flexible displays

ScienceDaily (Aug. 17, 2011) ? Organic semiconductors hold immense promise for use in thin film and flexible displays -- picture an iPad you can roll up -- but they haven't yet reached the speeds needed to drive high definition displays. Inorganic materials such as silicon are fast and durable, but don't bend, so the search for a fast, durable organic semiconductor continues.

Now a team led by researchers at Stanford and Harvard universities has developed a new organic semiconductor material that is among the speediest yet. The scientists also accelerated the development process by using a predictive approach that lopped many months -- and could lop years -- off the typical timeline.

For the most part, developing a new organic electronic material has been a time-intensive, somewhat hit-or-miss process, requiring researchers to synthesize large numbers of candidate materials and then test them.

The Stanford and Harvard-led group decided to try a computational predictive approach to substantially narrow the field of candidates before expending the time and energy to make any of them.

"Synthesizing some of these compounds can take years," said Anatoliy Sokolov, a postdoctoral researcher in chemical engineering at Stanford, who worked on synthesizing the material the team eventually settled on. "It is not a simple thing to do."

Sokolov works in the laboratory of Zhenan Bao, an associate professor of chemical engineering at Stanford. They are among the authors of a paper describing the work, published in the Aug. 16 issue of Nature Communications. Al?n Aspuru-Guzik, an associate professor of chemistry and chemical biology at Harvard, led the research group there and directed the theory and computation efforts.

The researchers used a material known as DNTT, which had already been shown to be a good organic semiconductor, as their starting point, then considered various compounds possessing chemical and electrical properties that seemed likely to enhance the parent material's performance if they were attached.

They came up with seven promising candidates.

Semiconductors are all about moving an electrical charge from one place to another as fast as possible. How well a material performs that task is determined by how easy is it for a charge to hop onto the material and how easily that charge can move from one molecule to another within the material.

Using the expected chemical and structural properties of the modified materials, the Harvard team predicted that two of the seven candidates would most readily accept a charge. They calculated that one of those two was markedly faster in passing that charge from molecule to molecule, so that became their choice. From their analysis, they expected the new material to be about twice as fast as its parent.

Sokolov, the Stanford researcher, said it took about a year and a half to perfect the synthesis of the new compound and make enough of it to test. "Our final yield from what we produced was something like 3 percent usable material and then we still had to purify it."

When the team members tested the final product, their predictions were borne out. The modified material doubled the speed of the parent material. For comparison, the new material is more than 30 times faster than the amorphous silicon currently used for liquid crystal displays in products such as flat panel televisions and computer monitors.

"It would have taken several years to both synthesize and characterize all the seven candidate compounds. With this approach, we were able to focus on the most promising candidate with the best performance, as predicted by theory," Bao said. "This is a rare example of truly 'rational' design of new high performance materials."

The researchers hope their predictive approach can serve as a blueprint for other research groups working to find a better material for organic semiconductors.

And they're eager to apply their method to the development of new, high-efficiency material for organic solar cells.

"In the case of renewable energy, we have no time for synthesizing all the possible candidates, we need theory to complement synthetic approaches to accelerate materials discovery," said Aspuru-Guzik.

Spain: Student plotted attack on anti-Pope crowd (AP)

MADRID ? Spanish police have arrested a chemistry student suspected of planning a gas attack against protesters opposed to a visit by Pope Benedict XVI, an official said Wednesday.

The pontiff is due to arrive Thursday for a nearly four-day visit to celebrate World Youth Day, and a protest march is scheduled for Wednesday evening in Madrid.

A police official said the suspect arrested in Madrid on Tuesday is a 24-year-old Mexican student specializing in organic chemistry. She would not say whether investigators believe the man was actually capable of carrying out a gas attack, and did not know if the man actually had chemicals for an attack.

The Mexican Embassy identified the detainee as Jose Perez Bautista and said he was from Puebla state, near Mexico City.

Police have 72 hours from the time of the arrest to take the detainee before a judge at the National Court for questioning or release him. A court official said he would appear before the judge Thursday at the earliest

The court official ? speaking on condition of anonymity in line with court policy ? said the detainee had been making threats over the Internet against people in Spain opposed to the Pope's visit, and police who'd been monitoring his online activity ultimately decided to arrest him as the visit approached.

Police said in a statement released Tuesday night that officers who searched the detainee's apartment in a wealthy district of Madrid seized an external hard-drive and two notebooks with chemical equations that had nothing to do with his studies.

It said he tried to recruit people via the Internet to help him, and that a computer allegedly used for this purpose was among objects seized by police.

The statement said the man had planned to attack anti-Pope protesters with "suffocating gases" and other chemicals. But it did not mention police having confiscated chemicals that could be used in an attack.

The police official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with police rules.

The statement said the suspect was in Madrid studying with Spain's top government research body, the Spanish National Research Council and his office there was searched. The council confirmed the arrest but gave no immediate details on the Mexican.

Church organizers say the papal visit is costing about euro50 million ($72 million) to stage. Protesters complain the government is essentially spending taxpayer's money on the visit by granting tax breaks to corporate sponsors and perks such as discount subway and bus tickets for pilgrims.

joys of trail riding, benefits of horseback riding, horse ...

I don?t compete in horse shows. ?I don?t enter long distance endurance rides. ?I don?t have blinged out tack or fancy riding clothes. ? Some of my horses don?t even have registration papers!! ?I am ?backyard?.

This term, backyard, especially when paired with ?breeder? as in backyard breeder has a negative connotation of someone who collects horses, allows them to randomly breed and then sit in a muddy paddock somewhere. ?Let me assure you that is not me.

I do have my horses in my backyard and one of the things I love best is being able to hear them in the pasture and look out my window and see them grazing!

    splash Oct 10 500x375 I am Backyard.

This summer in particular has been wonderful to have my horses at home. ?The good days carry you thru all the snow, ice, mud, rain and grunt work involved in caring for horses! ?The horse in the photo above was rescued from a kill pen. ?He is a young, well put together appy and is proving himself to be a wonderful trail horse! ?I?ve been taking him out and riding him along the farm fields and woods surrounding my home. ?I usually ride alone and haven?t had a horse suitable to take out like this for a few years so it has been heavenly!! ?He is sane, sound (thanks to my barefoot trimmer!!) and fun to ride! ?A canter across a field takes your cares away better than anything! ?To be able to walk out my door and saddle up my horse and do this as a break in the afternoon is truly a gift. ?To live in an area where I can ride is another gift. ?The only drama in my barn is created by the interaction between the donkey, goats, dogs and horses! ?So I guess that makes me a ~ no drama momma backyard non breeder ~!

I categorized this post as a Health Tip. ?We all know our pets and horses help to keep us healthy and happy!

Here?s for putting drama on the canvas instead of in my life! ?:)
