Hands-On: HaxSync Brings Facebook Contacts to Galaxy Nexus

Google?s Ice Cream Sandwich software brought a litany of improvements to the first Android 4.0 phone, Samsung?s Galaxy Nexus.? One of our favorite enhancements is the new People app, a supercharged address book that pulls in users? Google+ and Twitter contacts, as well as their updates. There?s just one problem, the app doesn?t work with Facebook.

Thankfully, developer Mathias Roth has created HaxSync, an app that integrates Facebook contacts and their updates with the People app. We tested HaxSync on the Galaxy Nexus to see how well it fills the void.

To get HaxSync up and running, you?ll first have to make sure that you?ve already downloaded and installed the official Facebook app onto your Galaxy Nexus. Once Facebook is installed, follow these instructions:

?Download HaxSync from the Android Market (it will cost your $0.99) and tap install.

Open your device?s System settings and tap Accounts & Sync.

Select Add an account at the bottom of the screen and choose HaxSync from the list of accounts.

Tap Authorize HaxSync and the app will begin syncing your Facebook contacts with People.

Open People and your contact list should now be populated with your Facebook contacts.

Tapping on a Facebook friend from the People app will bring up a larger version of their photo, as well as an about tab from which you should be able to view your their Facebook profile. Unfortunately, whenever we would tap View profile, HaxSync would instantly crash.

We were also disappointed to find that the app didn?t bring in our Facebook friends? email addresses, phone numbers, or any other contact information. The app also seemed to have trouble drawing in status updates from certain friends, making the app all but useless for those particular contacts.

HaxSync is a good idea for a problem that shouldn?t exist in the first place. But the app?s inability to draw in any meaningful contact information from our Facebook friends, as well as its propensity to crash mean you should avoid HaxSync until the kinks are worked out. In the meantime, we?re still hoping that Google and Facebook will make nice and officially bring Facebook to our Galaxy Nexus.
