A week ago, our desire was to load up the car with supplies and head to Joplin, Missouri; site of the biggest tornado in decades; and help out any way we could.
We were quickly?dissuaded?from this logic; too many volunteers for the city to handle; no water, no facilities, no food. Stay home until there is ?a plan in place to accept volunteers. We bought supplies and loaded trucks that were delivering supplies quickly, but we didn?t go.
Instead, we registered with the United Way Joplin Relief Effort, and waited to be called.
And now, we?ve been called.
We?re told to prepare physically by wearing steel toe shoes, if we have them, and bringing reinforced gloves and lots of sunscreen. There probably won?t be food or water for us; we?ll need to take our own.
We?re told to prepare mentally in two ways. The first is to remember always that we are dealing with what may look like trash, but is really the pieces of people?s lives. Be respectful. Seek first to understand.
The second is to be prepared to see what all say is indescribable until you see it. If you know Joplin, (as I do; I used to do work there frequently), be prepared for that place not to exist.
And so we are putting in place the things to wear and take, and the things to remember. With some?trepidation, I?m very glad we have the opportunity.
There is no didactic entrepreneurial lesson in this blog. Just notes On Preparing To Go To Joplin.
