COMMENTARY | It would appear Herman Cain accusers are coming out of the woodwork to take down the rising GOP star, but are these attacks strengthening his supporters resolve? Cain is becoming more popular and there can only be one explanation.
The American people are smart enough to see a concerted effort by the media to eliminate Cain from the presidential picture. Cain is experiencing increasing support as a backlash against the media frenzy to discredit him. I can only think of one term to describe his increased popularity: "The Bill Clinton Bounce."
Bill Clinton gained traction in the race for president once women came forward to discredit the popular Democratic candidate. The New York Times detailed accounts of Clinton's 1992 accusers, Gennifer Flowers and Paula Jones, toward the end of his tenure as president.
Clinton's popularity did not wane in the face of accusations by his two accusers, instead his popularity soared and he found himself in the White House despite the appearances of impropriety with several women.
Did the Republicans learn from Clinton's popular run in 1992? Attacks on Cain are coming from all sides but none of the accusers has chosen to open up a civil case regarding sexual harassment. This may not prove Cain's innocence but it does make it impossible for Cain to defend himself in a court of law.
Yahoo! News reports Cain is tied with Mitt Romney after the accusations became public. He also raised $2 million in one week according to the same report. Cain's inexperienced campaign team has clearly handled the situation poorly but it doesn't matter.
"The Bill Clinton Bounce" is already taking hold and Cain could be alone out front for the Republican presidential nomination in a few short weeks. Romney and other Republican presidential candidates are staying away from the controversy but Rick Perry's campaign is accused of starting a smear campaign.
Whether it is Democrats bringing these women to the media or fellow Republicans, Cain and his campaign can use this situation to gain them traction in the upcoming primaries. If Cain handles these accusations right he can find himself as the next president.
