Waterskiing and wakeboarding are water sports you can learn and try in a day. Both sports need to have a tow boat, cables and lots of balancing on your side. Fortunately, there are several holiday resorts that offer lessons so that you can learn in less than a day. You?ll notice that many rookies that learn to wake board or water ski in half a day.
What is Water skiing?
As the name indicates, you?ll hop onto a pair of skis and steer across the water in them. The These skis are tweaked versions of the skis you use on snow. You will be grasping a cable attached to the tow boat and riding in the wake of the speeding boat.
There are some people who use only one ski rather than a pair of skis. This is another technique that is best left for more advanced water ski professionals, or those that have undergone intensive training. Some water ski enthusiasts move on to win medals in competitions.
Wake Boarding
Wakeboarding is relatively new compared to surfing which has been around for a long time. When a few surfers tried to use surfboards to water ski, wakeboarding was born. Word quickly spread and soon, people were ordering their own wake boards. The idea is to ?surf? in the wake of a special tow boat.
In wakeboarding, a board that is slightly smaller than the smallest surfboard is used. The board used in wakeboarding resembles a skateboard without the upturned side. The bottom is not flat but rounded in order to skim the surface of the water more effectively. A couple of fins are also attached to the underside for better maneuvering on the water surface.
Safety Equipment
You will need to wear a helmet and pads for knees and elbows when you go wakeboarding or skiing on water. The water may seem soft, but hitting the surface of the water at a high speed can cause bodily damage like hitting a cemented pavement. A suit that can cover your legs and arms is also needed.
Another person, not counting the driver must be in the boat while you?re wakeboarding or skiing. A spotter is an essential part of the team. This spotter will tell the boat driver when it?s time to speed up or slow down. Even when the rider is a professional, there should be someone there looking out for him. The spotter will also be the one to tell the driver if there are problems, so that the boat can slow down and the rider can be fished out of the water.
